Gunner's Amputation
Gunner's Recovery
Gunner, 18 months old, got out of our yard, unfortunately, on a Friday night.  We looked everywhere, called every vet in the city to put out a watch for him, and called the radio stations that put out lost and found reports every week.  Nothing.  We heard reports from some people that they saw a black dog in a neighbors driveway wandering around.  No sign of him when we looked for him there.
Then a week later, early Saturday morning I hear a noise on our back deck.  I get out of bed and look, look like I did all week whenever I heard a noise hoping it was Gunner.
This is what I see.  At first glance I thought it was just white bone sticking out and that his lower leg was missing.
However, it turns out to be his foot is totally skinless, muscle, bone, and tendons showing.  The muscles are so contracted he can't put his leg down.
We call our vet, it's like 6:30AM, we meet him a half hour later.  He is shocked at what he see's.  He says it looks like his leg has been trapped in a wire snare type trap for the whole week he was missing.  Amputation is the only thing he can do because the leg is so badly damaged.
Our vet wasn't going to operate that Saturday, however, after putting Gunner on fluids all day, when he checked on him later that evening, around 5PM, he said he was strong enough to handle the surgery and was in so much pain, he had to operate and get the leg off.
So, we sat and waited for 3 hours.  Hard to eat dinner wondering how Gunner was going through the surgery.  Still a possibility that he could die on the operating table.
Well, over 60 stitches later, Gunner made it through the surgery just fine.  He was ready to play after waking up.
