| Chapter 1 Vocab. Continued... Host bus- Memory or system bus Jumper- Wires that stick up side to side that hold configuration information. Keyboard- Stadard one has 102 keys. Use to type in information and communicate with the computer. Main board- mother Board Megahertz- MHz- 1 million cycles per second Monitor- The computer screen, hooks up to the video graphic port. Mother board- Most important board in the computer. Mouse- A pointer on ther screen used to select on items and fin out information on items. Nonvolatile- Cn hold data as long as electricity in powering the Memor. Stable RAM. Parallel Port- Printer Port Periphelal device- Devices that comunicate with the CPU but aren't on the mother. Like a mouse or a keyboard Port- a connector in ther back of the case to connect a peripheral device. Power supply- Convert AC to DC. supplys 3.3 volts, 5 volts and 12 volts. Primary Storage- temporary storage on the mothe board which is used by the CPU. RAM Printer- A device that produces priter output to paper. Processor- The CPU Program- A set of step bt step instructions to a computer. Protocol- A set of rules and stadrads which 2 entities use for communication. RAM- Random Access Memory- Memory chips on the motherboard contianing microchips to temporily old data and programs while the CPU processes them. RIMM- Rambus Inline Memory Module ROM- Read only Memory- chips that contain programming code that can not be earsed. Secondary Storage- Storage that is remote to the CPU and holds datd even if the computer thurns off. Like a hard drive or a CD ROM. Serial Port- 9 pins- Data travels in serial, one right after another. SIMM- Single Inline Memory Module- A type of Ram that goes at a 45 degree angle. Software- prgrams or insturtions to perfrom a task. System Board- The mother board System Clock- A line on a bus that is dedicated to timing the acticities of a computer connected to it.
