| Chapter 1 Vocab. ASCII- American Standard Code for Information Interchange- Binary code standrad Binar number system- a way of communicaion using 1 and 0. 1 is on while 0 is off. A 1 or a 0 is called a bit. There are 8 bits in a byte and 4 in a nibble. BIOS- Basic Inout Output system- Stores all drives and time and date information. Runs off a battery Bit- One number in the binary system. A 1 or 0 in the binary system Bus- The trace lines on the Mother board Byte- 8 bits, which is composed of 1 and 0 Cards- Runs un solts in the mother board to better its performane CPU- Central Processing Unit- Gives out commands and processes data Chips set- Sends out information for the CPU. Consits of the North and South Bridge. Circuit board- The mother board, adaptor board or cards. Clock Speed- The spped that controls the activity on the mother board. Controlled by a chystal or an oscillator on the mother board. CMOS- Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor- The configuration or setup chip. CMOS Configuration chip- Hold configuration information about the mothe board. It contais a small amount of RAM, just enough to hold configuration or setup. CMOS Setup Chip- Holds configuration information about the system, such as time and date. Data bus- the trace lines on a mother board. Data Pathe Size- The number of lines on a Bus that can hold data. DIMM- Dual Inline Memory Module- A type of RAM that comes in DDR (Double Data Rate) and SD (Syncronis Dynamics). Slides straight in the mother board. DIP switch- Dual Inline Package- A switch on a circuit boad that can turn on or off to hold configuration or setup data. Epansion card- A card in the mother board to enhance its perfromance. Expansion Solt- sol solt on the mother board in which cards can be placed. Firmware- A device, like a CD, tha is both hardware and software. Flash Rom- A Rom that can be reprogrammed with out being replaced. Gigahertz- GHz- 1 thousan MHz- 1 billion cycles per second. Hard copy- Output from printer to paper. Hardware- The tangable things inside/outside a computer. Hertz- Hz- A unit of measurement for ferquency- cycles per second Hexadecimal notation- Hex- Uses 16 digits, 0-9 and A-F. HOME Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 |
