Shiatsu
Shiatsu therapy originated on Hokkaido island in northern Japan and was invented by Tokujiro Namikoshi who was born Nov. 3, 1905. At the young age of 7 he began massaging his mother who often complained of pain in her joints from the cold and humid climate. Achieving miraculous results by eventually bringing about a complete cure he was inspired to deepen his studies. Many years later he introduced Shiatsu therapy as an original system of natural healing. In 1925 he opened a Shiatsu institute on Hokkaido island and in 1940 he opened the Japan Shiatsu Institute in Tokyo. By 1964 Shiatsu spread worldwide gaining rapid popularity mainly for its simple and effective ways. Shiatsu stands for finger pressure. It involves the stimulation of pressure points (tsubo) specific to the areas of need coupled with massage and some stretches. This can really help specific areas that are stiff or painful and it is a wonderful way to rejuvenate the body.
