| The Paganslayer | ||||
| History is carved out of the brutality of war, and there are few greater historians in that sense than the Paganslayers of Pantheon. So named because of the pagan, or false, religions of Albion and Midgard, the Paganslayer dedicates his or her life to the defense of Hibernia on the field of battle and the destruction of her enemies. There are few duties beyond this, but just this singular devotion is critical in maintaining Pantheon's role in Hibernia. The Paganslayers single task, not including those standard with all ranks (i.e. roleplaying, etc., see Goservant) is: 1. Serve faithfully on the field of battle, be it the battleground, the frontiers, or the various dungeons in Hibernia. The Paganslayer is the armed guard of Pantheon, the military might of the gods. Though they may come from many different walks of life, and have many different beliefs, the common bond that unites the divine soldiers is their devotion to the guild and their eternal conviction to slay ones' enemies. Many in Pantheon stay in this rank, as it encompasses what the guild is trying to accomplish with its secondary motivation (that of defending the realm and its people against invaders). It is also worth noting that this rank is the only rank that a Godservant may "jump" to. The explanation is as follows: There are two paths the Godservant may choose, in essence, when they decide to advance beyond their state. Those that have little desire to become imbroiled in the goings-on of the guild itself either choose to remain Godservants and worship in relative peace, or become Paganslayers and serve Hibernia first and foremost. Those godservants that choose the internal guild path which makes them far more active in and out of the guild choose any of the remaining ranks as their destination and advance accordingly (i.e. from Godservant, to Pariah, to Faith's Defender, etc.) It is important to note that Godservants who wish to advance directly to Paganslayer will never be considered for full Avatar status, unless they return to the level of Godservant and progress through the ranks. Only those that work their way up have earned enough merit and skill in the eyes of the gods to become their Avatars. In this way the Godservants provide the basis for direct military might (those that choose to be Paganslayers directly) and divine might (those that choose a different path, be it anywhere from Pariah to Avatar). The progression from Godservant directly to Paganslayer is the same as that of Pariah, see Godservant for more details. Now, should the Paganslayer in question have attained this rank through progression from Godservant, to Pariah, and then to Faith's Defender, he or she is allowed the opportunity to advance yet again to the rank of Asa Taran, or Divine Thunder. The Asa Taran are the elite warriors of the guild, and the personal guard of the Avatars. To advance from Paganslayer to Asa Taran requires the following steps... 1. Defending at least one keep successfully from the rampaging hordes of foreign invaders. This need not be done with guildmates present, but is a measure of your dedication to the protection of Hibernia and her ways. 2. Enlisting and serving in at least two successful keep raids, and taking from the Albion fools or Midgard barbarians what is rightfully ours. Offense is weighed with greater importance as defending the realm with only keep the attackers at bay, attacking them however will result in our eventual victory. 3. Maximizing your recognized kills in one or more of the battlegrounds (realm points). This is an optional task, but is regarded as great merit on your way to Asa Taran. Staying in one area until you have killed all the invaders you can shows your tenacity against the enemy, your will to fight until the very end. 4. Declaring or accepting as many duels as you can against your fellow guildmate (as a friendly test of skill) or fellow Hibernian (as a serious test of skill). Sparing and dueling with those around you helps keep your edge in combat at its peak, and provides a great source of education in terms of your own, and others in your realm's, capabilities. Should you duel against one of every class in the realm, you will know just how they defeat their enemies, and how they themselves can be defeated. This will translate in the battlefield as knowledge on how best to cooperatively work with the skills of your fellow soldiers. |
