Fishing and Crabing in the Nome and Shishmaref Area |
These crabs are the main reason I love to visit Nome. They are readily available live or cooked at the Seafood processing plant or you can catch your own in winter or spring.
One year in Nome the crabs were only 50 yards from the beach and all you needed was to dig a hole and use a hand line. In Shishmaref people go by snow machine in April 40 miles down the coast to Lighthouse and hand line all the Crabs they want.
There is nothing like fresh crab right out of the water but I have grown very fond of heating cooked crab in the oven |

You can eat these in the resturant, cook them in your room or have whole crabs or legs packed and shipped home. |

There are all varieties of Salmon in the Nome, Shishmaref area. The size, season and access vary depending on the fish. The Kings can average around 25lbs and is my favorite to smoke. They require a jet boat and some time to get to. Pinks are plentyfull on odd years and are good canned, dried or smoked. You can purchase any amount you like from several local fihseries or enjoy the experience of getting out in the wild and catching a few of your own. |

The Dolly Vardon above is very common to the area and you can catch these all day long 1-3lbs. In the winter through the ice 5lb to 15lb is possible. These fish can get very large, up to 50lbs have been caught by net. |
