The stranger (age 9)
Chapter IV
Hoping to GOD that my mother's ailment will be cured, we transferred to the place of my stepfather's friend in Burnai, Gitagum, Misamis, Oriental. They welcomed us warmly and unselfishly showed kindness. They offered us a house for us to shade and they regularly invited us to the beach for picnic in groups.
During school opening, my mother enrolled me at Burnai Elementary School as Grade III. My new teacher discovered that I have a talent in singing so every morning before our class started, she let me sang first.
A couple of months later, there was a misunderstanding between by stepfather and his friend. We leave the house and transferred to the six square meters - newly built nipa hut beside the seashore, a very small one. The floor was made of filed coconut branch. The roof and walls were made of squared coconut leaves. Our only means of living was fishing through the use of arrow (pana) by hand. Mother sold the extra fish caught by my stepfather to buy corn rice. That's how poor we were.
Some children in the place were mocking us for we are just poor and squatter in the area. I didn't go out and play with them. Sometime, they stoned our small nipa hut. For them it was just for fun but for us it was a great insult. We were forced to live there because we have nowhere to go and beside it was the only place we believe would help cure my mother's ailment. So we patiently stayed there.
One time in school, accidentally, my left leg had wounded so big. I banged to a sharp big iron while running fast to join a play of firing toy guns. Much blood came out from by leg but soon I recovered.
During Christmas celebration in school, I'm the only one who doesn't have gift for my monito. We don't have money to buy for a gift but thank GOD that my teacher understands me and still let me joined the party. What surprised me much was that, my mother came in the party and brought the gift. I don't know where she got the money but I was touched by here action. She did everything for me just to show that she really loves me and I really missed my mother.
One day, there was one couple walking a long the seashore. They have noticed our small nipa house (barong-barong). They have a kind heart. That time, they were looking for someone to take care of their coconut fields in Mauswagon, Laguindingan, Misamis, Oriental. So they offered us the favor. The place was also near the seashore so still my mother can smell the fresh air that's why we accepted the good offer.
