High School Adventure (age 13-17)
Chapter VII
After my graduation in Grade VI, Sister Paredes, a nun who was one of the invited guests during our graduation rites approached me and offered me some help. According to her, she would sponsor me for my schooling, provided I would enroll high school at Leonardo High School, a public school near her area of responsibility.
However in June 1984, I followed the advise of my aunt and uncle. I enrolled as first year student at Sacred Heart High School, a private school managed and operated by the Columban Sisters located in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. Since I don't have enough money to pay for my tuition fee, I applied as working student in our school. I approached Sister Mercedes Ventanilla and told her with tears about my willingness to pursue my studies but have no enough money to finance for it. She accepted me as working student after knowing that I'm an orphan.
She assigned me to take charge of school toilets. Everyday after attending classes, I swept it with brush and brooms, I cleaned the wide flagpole area, and watered the plants that sorrounds the school campus. Every Saturday on the other hand, I cleaned the convent's fishpond then went to the prayer room for weekly reflections. Sometimes, some teachers in the school were asking me favor to deliver some letters, notices and etc.
When I finished my job in the school, I helped my aunt Raymunda in housekeeping works. I cooked food, washed the dishes, swept the floor, clean the house surrounding, assisted my young cousins in taking a bath, pitched drinking water, washed their clothes, collecting and cutting of dried branches of trees to be used in cooking of food, etc.
During Sundays, I regularly went to hear mass in church. Then I went to the Bus terminal for a little sideline business like selling ice and cold water. I also went to public market to assist vendors in carrying baskets or box filled with fish or whatsoever. The money that I garnered will be used to buy for my personal needs such as shorts, t-shirts, pants and merienda in schools.
After four years of patience and hard work, I have graduated high school. Much more, when I passed the National College Entrance Examination and got the 94% rate, my hope to enter college was so high.
