Personal Bibliography
as an avid reader, i believe that works i've read have had an impact on my thinking and the way i choose to live my life.  below is a selected and sometimes annotated bibliography of works that i feel have resonnated with or shaped me.  for greater user-friendliness, i have categorized the selections as either fiction or non-fiction.  i heartily recommend reading any of these books.  email me if you have comments, questions or suggestions for me.
Fiction
Carter, Angela.  The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.  New York:  Penguin, 1979.

these are fairy tales, rewritten from a feminist perspective.

Churchill, Caryl.
Cloud 9.  revised American ed.  New York:  Routledge, 1984.
this is the script of a play, and really, you ought to see it live.  but the script is
       definitely an interesting read
.

Elgin, Suzette Haden.
Native Tongue. New York:  The Feminist Press, 1984.

a classic of feminist speculative fiction.

Esquivel, Laura.

Stranger in a Strange Land. New York:  Ace Books, 1961.

grok?

Hopkinson, Nal
o.  Brown Girl in the Ring.  New York:  Warner Books, 1998.

this is a facinating work of sci-fi fantasy by a black womyn based on carribean magic
       lore.

Hurston, Zora Neal
e.  I Love Myself When I Am Laughing...And Then Again When I Am
       Looking Mean and Impressiv
e.  New York:  The Feminist Press, 1979.

just the title of this is enough to inspire me!  the introduction will tell you from whence the
title came, so i won't bother.  this is a collection of Hurston's work with an intro by Alice
       Walker--a good starter piece.

Hurston, Zora Neal

a haunting tale of a misdirected quest for beauty.

Shange, Ntozake.
For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow
       is Enuf:
a choreopoem.  New York:  macmillan publishing, 1977.
another one that's better performed than printed.  but i recommend getting your hands on
a copy of the script if you see it, or even if
you don't.

Walker, Alice.
Alice Walker Banned.  San Francisco:  aunt lute books, 1996.

Walker, Alice. The Color Purple.  New York:  Washington Square, 1982.

Walker, Alice. Possessing the Secret of Joy.  New York:  Washington Square, 1992.
these are three Walker titles on my shelf at the moment, but i say, get your hands on
       anything you can by her.

Winterson, Jeanette.  Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.

a somewhat autobiographical story of a queer girl coming of age in a strangely religious
       home.

Winterson, Jeanette.
Written on the Body.
this is a novel about love and loss, honesty and self-deception.  i love it.
winterson's prose is like expensive candy given by a beloved grandmother.  it begs to be
read out loud and experienced with all the senses.
