Dannevirke is a support service town for a large farming area. Farms are mostly dairy milking cows, sheep, deer and cattle. Climate is such that animals are not required to be housed in barns during the winter months. In spring farmers are able to shut up paddocks and bale the growth in hay bales or save it in silage pits as supplement to winter feeding.

I tell you my dear my udder is killing me, sooner I get to the shed the better.
