Inflammatory Bowel Disease- two types
Colitis (Ulcerative colitis)- inflammation and ulceration that affects the lining of the colon and rectum *symptoms: bloody diarrhea, mucus and pus in stool, fever, and/or abdominal pain
Crohn disease- inflammation in part of the gastrointestinal tract but the most common site it the end of the small intestine or large intestine which develops ulcers from repeated inflammation *symptoms: abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite, malabsorbtion (can cause weight loss and anemia), rectal bleeding, rectal abscess, and rectal fissures and fistulas; intestinal obstruction can occur in advanced cases; may cause arthritis, skin diseases, and eye inflammation
