This race was tremendous fun! RoadKill was there and once again we took hundreds of pictures. You see some them here, but if you want to check out all of them, go to RKBILL.COM, select the RoadKill racing banner, and click on the Matthews 5K. Edie Smith was there so RK did their best to capture the moment. The police were there running in a group. When they were warming up, RK Bill, wandered over there and they snapped to attention and said, "Good morning, sir". It was a rookie class that wanted to run through the race for exercise. Sam Lewis was there. We took a few pictures of him with Kay Weems (and Kay's son). Do you remember her from years ago. One of the fastest runners in our area back then. She's coming back. Jill Smith was there. Jill was almost apologetic about her finish time. She's funny! Hey, she got her picture in the Running Journal (August) for winning her age group at the Lake Wylie Splash Dash 10K. Ernie LaCasse was there too. He and Jill had on yellow shirts with "RunSouth" on them. When asked they said something about a new business venture. I didn't get a lot of details, but I'll try to find out more. I notice that Ernie has "RunSouth" on the entry form for his Loop The Nuke 5K coming up on Sept. 23. That's the race that runs around the Catawba Nuclear Station. It used to be on a weekday, but Ernie is moving it to a Saturday (good move). The Boca burgers (hot veggie giveaways) were a big hit at Osprey! Good idea to bring them in! Rich Falcone crossed the line first again. John Walton got 1st Master (Dan Hyde just a few seconds back). Kari et al did a great job on this race. Take a break Kari, go have your baby, take a rest (put ol' Steve to work), then start your training again.
Matthews 5K:
July 4th in Matthews. Not quite the same as Peachtree, but certainly entertaining. Rocky won it overall for the guys. The best race was the fun run. Three boys were approaching the finish line side-by-side. With about 50m to go, the one in the middle gave the kid on his right an elbow and sent him sprawling to the ground. This also tripped up the kid who threw the elbow so they were both wiped out of the finishing sprint. Of course, the kid on the right (who managed to avoid all of the knees and elbows) crossed the line first. The kid in the middle crossed next and then the one who got the worst of it crossed shortly afterward...crying his eyes out. He got busted up, but he didn't slug the other kid. If someone had done that to Kimaiyo, I'm not sure I could have held together like that kid did. I don't know his name, but there's a picture of him finishing below. He'll remember that in the next race, so if you see him near the end of your next race, give him lots of room because I guarantee you he'll be ready to react if it happens again! Good job kid.
Kimaiyo doesn't want to see Thomas Cason leave Charlotte. He's a great guy. It's a shame he has to go. Being a college coach sure is unpredictable! He has been interviewing in places like Long Island and Pittsburgh, but he has an interview next week at Methodist College in Fayetteville. Charlotte is the loser in this deal, I'm afraid. Perhaps we'll get another chance at him when he gets more national attention.
