July 2000

Bill meeting new friends at the HarborWalk 8K race (Georgetown, SC) RoadKill Dan at Georgetown walking away with yet another piece of hardware. oadKill racers appeared at the beach just before the July 4th holidays. RK Bill and RK Dan were down there soaking up the
sun for a few days. They picked out an 8K race in Georgetown, SC to visit (Harborwalk 8K) while they were there. Turned out to be a good time. Folks smiled for the camera. They each raced well on a flat course. And they met several new friends. Only tough part was the heat. Luckily most of the race was run in the shade of the neighborhoods, but the last mile was out in the open sun. Hyde said it was blazing hot (but he still got third overall and first "old guy").

A masterful bunch...Randy Aldridge, Steve Shonts, Dan Hyde Racing as a master in the Charlotte area is very competitive! These guys are out there slugging each other at every race. Steve Shonts has been winning most of the time recently, but John Zizzi is getting hot again. Then there's a large pack trying to catch them... John Walton after the Osprey 5K.
Dan Hyde, John Walton, Randy Aldridge, Pete Kaplan, Harry Ash, Jerry Clark (he's back to training hard again), and Greg LeBlanc. When Terry Jones gets healthy again, he'll join in the fun too! Dwight Hargett is starting to train harder. It won't be long before he gets it all together for a really good race. He's been busy training on the bike as well as running. He went down to Florida for a biathlon recently. The masters group seems to be having the most fun out of any age bracket right now. It never seems to get dull for them. There is always someone new turning 40 and they are really pumped to clean house in the masters category. Ol' Selwyn Blake from Columbia is about to become a masters runner! Can you imagine that. There won't be many masters runners in the country that will be able to beat him...but they'll have a good time trying!! We might be seeing Selwyn's pic in Runner's World in a year or so as their Masters Runner of the Year (I think John Tuttle grabbed it last year).
Michelle meets RoadKill Dan Sabrina Martin and her son after the Davidson Town Day 5K. Ken Martin in the middle. Bucky Biggs, George Walker, Randy Aldrige, and Danno George is deep in thought. Actually this is the cover to George's latest CD.
The Charlotte Summer Breeze 5K race was brought back to the uptown area after being out in the suburbs for a few years. They charted out a nice fast course and gave us an evening start time. There were separate races for the men and women, which allowed the guys to cheer on the stronger sex. Did everyone see the guy who ran in the women's race with a wig and jog bra? I didn't have the camera on me, darn it. That would have been great RK material.

Dan Hyde was caught by the RK camera gushing over Michelle Lafleur at the end of the race. Michelle ran 17:23, good enough for 3rd overall and $325. She really cleaned up the previous weekend at the China Grove 5K, winning $400 total (1st mile prim in 5:27 and overall winner in 17:27).

It was good to see Sabrina Martin at the Summer Breeze race. She ran 17:42 (6th overall, $100). She can run like the wind!

David Riddle won the Clydesdale division with an 18:03. David is a dairy farmer and if you met him you would never guess that the guy can run that fast! He's an inspiration. He beat some really tough competition. He easily beat Chris Johnson, and I'm sure all you women know who Chris is by now. Superman.

Dave and Stephanie Agosta were in for the race. They are from Ohio, and they were visiting George Walker for the weekend. Stephanie didn't run. She's still recovering from an injury. Some of you might remember her. She has won this race before. She's a helluva runner. Dave ran, but I don't remember his finish time. Some of you might know Dave as well. He used to be George's coach back when George was running on the elite level. He's a miler from way back.

George was at the race, but he didn't run it. That's OK. Just getting him there is a positive step. Bucky had to pick him up to get him to the uptown area. You know George, he'd get lost if he went alone.

Beer was supposed to be provided as a post-race refreshment, but someone realized that they forgot to get a permit for it. Several cases of beer left over. I heard that several people were going to race headquarters after the race to try to make sure that it didn't go to waste. No confirmation on that one yet. There was a gathering of heros at the Rock Bottom restaurant after the race though. Beer was consumed in vast quantities, and we had Marjorie to drive us home! Another good time...
