THE YEAR: April 2nd, 2010 The story begins with a zoom up shot of a very large meteor heading straight for earth. The camera slowly moves back to let you see the smaller fragments that are infront of it. There is a great distance between the smaller meteors & the larger one, probably a few days. The next shot you see, is my friend and I waving goodbye to each other outside of her house. I'm about to get inside my car. 2005 Honda Element. Time: 7pm "Don't forget that we are going to the park tomorrow to walk our dogs," I say. "Oh yeah!," she says slapping her head with her hand. "Wait, Wait!!," she yells as she goes back inside her house. She comes out carrying a plate of food wrapped up in tin foil. "You almost left this behind," she says as she hands it to me through my window. We wave our goodbyes once more and I then proceed to drive off. It feels so good sitting down behind the wheel knowing I'll be home shortly. I take a left and then a right. This places me in the area where the more expensive homes can be found. I make my final left and end up on the road that will take me back to the highway. Travelling on this road has always given me the creeps. It reminds me of something I saw in a Friday the 13th movie. You know, when Jason crosses the road. Now on the highway, I slowly make it back to my exit to head back to my mom's house. Since we are walking the dogs in a park in Jefferson, Melissa feels it's best for me to drive to my mom's house. While passing the log cabin that gave me the inspiration to build my own, I notice that I am running out of gas. I pull off the first exit on HWY 10 & find myself at my usual Shell station. Before I can even pump my gas, the cell phone rings. "Hello," I say. "Hey girlfriend! It's Melissa again." "What's up? Did I forget anything else?," I ask. "No, but you did forget to tell me when to be at your mom's house.", she says with a yawn. "Oh .. I'm sorry. How about 1pm? That way we can bring some lunch, too.", I say. "Sure that sounds great! I'll see you then." I finish pumping my gas & proceed to get back into the car. Just as I do the phone rings again. I think 'Now what', but it's only my mother checking to see if I'm still on my way to her house. I wish that I could move her out of that neighborhood, but right now it's not possible. Money is just so tight. The ride to my mother's is usually a long one, but tonight for some reason it goes very quickly. I have my moonroof open, since it's the month of April and the air is very crisp and cool. I make it to my mom's house in record time. I get out of the car and start gathering my belongings. My mother is standing on the porch motioning me inside quickly. She seems upset. "You have to see this .. it's on the news," she says very frantically. "I have been trying to reach you, but you turned your phone off. It's not good. Look!" We sit together on the sofa and watch as the news tells us about the meteors heading to earth. They say that no matter where we are in the world, we will not be able to escape them. It goes on and on about some other stuff, but we shut it off after that part about the meteors. Both of us sit there in total shock not knowing what to say. It doesn't help that the phone starts ringing. I jump up quickly to get it before it wakes my dad. It's my best friend, Michael. He is a very famous astronomer. I take the phone into my old room and sit down on the daybed, which is up against the wall where my old bed use to fit. I press the phone to my ear and begin asking Michael what is going on with the meteors. "Oh! So you saw the news, eh?" he asks. "Yes, I'm afraid that my mother and I have seen it." "Well, then you know that those small meteors are made of iron and steel and are the size of a small car." "Uh .. No! They said they were small. That is all they said, SMALL," I say frantically. "Oh! Then you better sit down," he says. "Why? Am I going to die, too," I say shakily. "Well, there is something the news didn't tell you. Right behind those smaller meteors is a much larger one. It's larger than our earth and also made of iron and steel. My dad is an astronaunt and he is devising a plan for us to escape. This is a secret so do not go blab this to anyone. This plan will be there incase the worse comes. Now I need you to do something for me .. are you listening?" "Yes. I promise not to tell anyone." I say quickly. "Good, but the thing is this: I need you to gather up the people that you wish to take with you. There are 15 rooms for you and 15 for me and another 15, but we are not sure what to use them for right now. There is a bunkbed in each room and also a couple of crates for pets. There is a closet for hanging clothes and also for storing some things. Be very peticular what you bring. We can only hold so much. Got it?" "Please tell me, Michael, that this is some nasty Sci-fi joke. Don't worry I won't be mad at you." "I wish I could say this was a joke, Debbie, but it's not. You know I have the largest telescope in the world. I haven't even told the rest of the people yet. I want us to be able to get out before the panic begins." "Okay, so what am I suppose to do?", I ask. "Get as many of the people to meet you at your house. If they can't get there, have them meet you in Mobile." "Okay, Michael. I'll do what you say. Thanks." "No problem, darlin. That is what friends are for." We both hang up our phones and I take a deep sigh. I know what I have to do, but I dread doing it. Michael told me it would be three days, before the smaller meteors hit. He, also, said he would call me tomorrow. He wants to make sure we are coming. I lie on the bed for quite some time, before moving. I look at the clock on the wall and see it's 9pm. Well, I better get this over with. I slowly walk down the hall. Upon entering the livingroom, I find my mother in her usual corner of the sofa watching the TV. She looks up at me and smiles. I sit myself down in my dad's recliner. I have no clue as to what I'm going to say to her, but I know I have to think of something and fast. "So that was Michael?" she asks watching TV. "Yes, and he had something very important to say." "Well, what is it?" she asks curiously. "It's kind of hard to say," I say looking down. "Well, come sit by me," she says patting the cushion besides her. "It can't be all that bad." "Actually it is, it's very bad." "You are not going to come sit by me?", she asks. "No, it's best I sit in the recliner." "Okay, but I just took my medicine, so I'll be falling off to sleep soon.", she says. I start telling her the same stuff that Michael told me, but she acts like she doesn't hear me. Instead she gets up and goes in the kitchen and tries to get me to drink some tea. I finally have to grab her arm and make her sit back down in her spot. Just then dad comes down the hall. He goes to get some milk. I put the news back on. My dad sits in his recliner and I sit next to mom. With the news over, they now believe what is going on. I actually believe my dad had a tear in his eye. He goes and sits by mom and they hold each other. Looking over at me, my dad says, "What are we going to do now? How are we going to survive this?" "Well, like I was trying to tell mom. Michael wants us to gather up, as many people as, we can. He hasn't told anyone else, but me and his dad about this. Not to mention there is a larger meteor behind those smaller ones. Gather some clothes and a few personal belongings and we are to head to my house. He will call me tomorrow. We have to move fast." Just then the phone rings again. It's my friend, Trinette. I take the conversation into the bathroom. My dad lets my mother sleep, while he takes care of his stuff first. Trinette goes on to tell me about the news. I interrupt her to tell her the real news. I inform her to head to my house and call my name at my old window. That way I can let her in. We hang up. I walk around the house gathering up all the cross-stich pictures I made for mom. I put them in my car and go back to lying on the daybed. My father comes in, after some time has passed, and tells me he is done. He now goes and gets mom to do her stuff. After an hour has passed, I hear Trinette call my name. It's about the same time my mother finishes gathering her stuff. We lock up the home and head down the street with me first, mom next, and Trinette last. We make it to Vanderkloot Blvd., when we run right into 2 friends of my mothers. They are: Lynn and Janice. Mom works with them at a casino. We clue them in and they take the last position in the line. I watch as my house fades out of sight. It's a sad night for me. Even tho we pretty much know the fate of the world, we still stop at red lights along the way to the interstate. One by one we pull our cars onto the highway. The traffic is very light this night, so it should be a quick run to my house. We all keep our cars in the slow lane, so not to lose anyone. The ride to my house takes longer than usual, but then again it gives us time to think of the fate of the world. With Slidell now behind us, we travel up I-59. We exit # 15 and start heading easterly bound. I live a little above the town of Necaise, Ms. One by one the cars start pulling into my yard. I have a very long driveway that weaves to fro. With all of us now infront of my house, we exit our cars and proceed safely inside. The pets reside in the garage for the night. With four beds to sleep in, I show my tired guest to their rooms. I retire to my room, too. Waiting for me is my husband, who is quite upset by the news. We talk for awhile and then fall off to sleep. Tomorrow is a busy day. Get Your FreeWeb Pages
