DOES ANYBODY SEE WHAT I SEE?

John Adams sings this lament in 1776 because he is convinced no one sees the future he sees.

I can empathize.  Boy, can I empathize!

Having devoted numerous columns and other efforts to the issue of reducing property thefts,
I am beginning to feel like John Adams.

Is anybody there?  Does anybody care?  Does anybody see what I see?

Unfortunately, if we are not able to reduce the property losses being experienced by AACT insurance participants, what I see are higher insurance rates.

This could come in the form of a general rate increase for everyone.  The company could
impose a higher deductible on the theatrical properties coverage.  They could also impose restrictions on what properties will be covered.

For many years we have been able to limit rate increases by reminding the insurance
companies how safe the theatre insurance program is.

Despite our efforts, however, the insurance program has experienced a dramatic increase
in property losses;  particularly during the last twenty-four months.

Most frustrating of all is that so many of these property thefts occurred because valuable
property was left unsecured.

You cannot store electronic equipment in an empty hallway.
You cannot leave money in an unlocked drawer.
You cannot leave your video camera on your desk over the weekend.
You can not leave your laptop sitting on the counter while you go off and do something else.
You cannot allow others to use your facility without first securing your valuable equipment.

Many of you have not experienced a rate increase in almost five years, but property losses
like the ones just described jeopardize the overall safety of the theatre insurance program.
This, in turn, will jeopardize our ability to limit rate increases.

I know someone is there.  There are 267 of you out there to be exact.

I know you care.  No one wants to see their insurance premiums go up.

And now that you see what I see, I hope you will increase your group’s efforts to secure
your theatrical properties against further losses.
