WHAT FLOATS ON DRY LAND?

If your theatre group is insured through the AACT-endorsed insurance program, the answer is your theatrical properties floater.

Almost every theatre group owns theatrical properties; lights, sets, costumes, props, sound equipment, etc.

Whether or not these things are covered by your insurance is important.  Just as important, however, is the manner and extent to which they are covered.

Insurance companies, unfamiliar with theatre operations, often times insure theatrical properties as if they are business property like office equipment and furniture.

This might be all right, but you could be paying more then you need to pay and your coverage may be limited to the specific location named in your policy or limited in other ways.

In addition, insurance companies may consider some theatrical properties outside their definition of property and therefore not covered by your insurance at all.

Some insurance companies provide coverage through a separate inland/marine policy but again you might be paying more for limited coverage.

One of the most unique, and most attractive aspects of the AACT-endorsed insurance program is our theatrical properties floater.

This insurance endorsement allows you to establish a total value for all your theatrical properties without the necessity of actually listing [scheduling] each item in your insurance policy.

It almost always allows a much more favorable rate [cost of coverage] then is available if your theatrical properties are treated as business property.  This save you money.

It covers not only the properties you own, but the property of others that is under your care, custody and control.  This is important when you consider how often your group "borrows" stage props and other things from members and local businesses.

It includes automatic coverage for fine arts, jewelry, furs and antiques.

Most important, this theatrical properties coverage floats with your properties whatever their location.

The coverage applies whether your properties are stored at a theatre you own or at a space you rent.  The coverage goes with you if you take a production to different locations.  It applies if you store your properties in someone's basement or in a rented storage facility.

Are you paying more for limited coverage?  Does the insurance covering your theatrical properties go with you regardless of location, or is the coverage limited only to the specific location identified in your policy?  Does your insurance cover property of others that is under your care, custody and control?

Theatrical properties, even those ugly looking things made from vacuum cleaner parts that no one else would ever want, are important to your theatre's operations.  Does your insurance give you the kind of coverage you need?
