Why Online?

The purpose of this paper is to address the question of why college students choose online education versus traditional classroom courses. Most students choose online education because they are in need of further education for career purposes, whether it is for advancement in current career or changing careers. Because they are working full time they do not have the time to sit in a traditional style classroom.

An investigation of this topic will lead to a greater understanding of the underlying motivation and allow online educators to target this specific audience by providing subjects that are more focused on work place applicable programs. The research of this paper will be limited by a number of factors;

·   Time constraints, there is only a few short weeks to complete this project.

·   Experience, the author has never conducted ‘research’ as defined by the educational community (Mertler & Charles, 2005).

·   Scope, there are a limited number of people the author will be able to reach due to a limited range of contacts.

·   Resources, a more complete report would involve more interview and less survey or citations.

Regardless of limitations an earnest effort will be made to bring an understanding of the material presented and the means whereby it was gathered. This paper will begin with a review of already published material that has suggested these conclusions.
