Staying Sweet
I wanted always to be sweet,
Swore that I would stay the same.
Always believing in softness.
And then you came,
With your care and understanding,
To make me truly believe,
In all these things I held dear,
And we agreed;
The power of love,
Is stronger than steel,
Closer than distance,
Holds the power to heal.
Rose coloured glasses,
You gave to me,
So I could see the world,
In all its beauty.
With you I saw the stars,
Shone as warm as the sun,
But it seemed that you left,
As quickly as you had come.
You gave up on us,
Never gave me the chance,
To rescue what I thought,
A perfect romance.
Through the telescope of your rejection,
I have finally seen,
How it happened to those,
Who started sweet but fell mean.
So much hurt in the world,
It's so easy to turn hard,
Defending you core,
And protecting your heart.
Now I teeter on an abyss,
Here I struggle with this pain,
Not to turn cynical,
Be as I was, stay the same.
So long ago,
I swore I'd always be sweet.
Oh how much harder that is,
With an empty heartbeat.
