Reading
I have to admit most of my favourite books are children's books, mainly because
those are the ones I have read up till now, and I haven't really gotten into
adult fiction yet.
I loved all the mystery novels, including the Famous Five, the Secret Seven,
the Five Find Outers. Enid Blyton was great! Then all the American ones: the
Three Investigators, the Hardy Boys, and of course, my all time favourite, Nancy
Drew. If I'd been a girl, I know I'd have wanted to be Nancy. She was my heroine
(and still is).
Then there's the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. I
think they're some of the best fantasy novels ever written - I'm surprised she
hasn't received more credit for them. I'm sure the movies would be well worth
making.
My all time favourite author is without question Roald Dahl.
Apart from writing some of the best children's fiction of the twentieth
century, he had a real life story that reads like a tale on its own. I would
have loved to have met him.
And how can I not mention Harry Potter? They're all great, and
I take my hat off to Joanne Rowling - she's done us all a great service by
getting kids to read again. The only complaint I have about the books is that
they're a little sexist. Nearly all the females are weak, indecisive and
submissive. It's the guys who run the show. Apart from that, the books are
great entertainment.
Top Five Favourite Books
OK, here goes...
-
Back Home, by Michelle Magorian. This is the story of a
young girl who returns to Britain after being evacuated to America during the
Second World War. The story beautifully describes the changes she must adapt to
when returning to her native land.
-
The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I think
everyone's heard of this one, and the next ones too.
-
The Little Princess, by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
-
Black Beauty, by Anna Sevelle.
-
Heidi, by Joanna Spryi.
