Chapter 11 of the book of Daniel gives many details concerning the neighbouring nations affecting Israel. It covers the complete period from the Grecian rule to the endtime Islamic rule.
:2 Mede-Persian rule.
:3 Grecian rule - Alexander the Great who conquered all the land East of Greece and even entered India. He then made Babylon his capital. He died in Babylon at a very young age.
:4 Grecian rule – Grecian Empire was divided into 4 kingdoms (under the 4 generals of Alexander) after the death of Alexander the Great. General Seleucus inherited Babylon and the land surrounding it (mainly Iraq, Syria and Iran). The rest of Alexander's empire was taken over by the 3 other generals. Because of superstition, General Seleucus did not want Babylon to be his capital, thus he built Seleucia (named after him and near Babylon in the plain of Shinar on the River Tigris in Central Iraq) to be his capital. Thereafter, all his descendents were called the Seleucid kings.
:5-28 King of the north was identified as the Seleucid kings (founded by General Seleucus who assumed the title `king' in 305 BC). Seleucia was his capital but at a later stage it was moved to Antioch (named after his son Antiochus) in Syria
:5-28 King of the south was identified as Egypt (or any country south of Iraq) throughout the whole chapter up to verse 28.
:5-28 These events and wars were fulfilled during the days of the various Seleucid kings and the various Ptolemy kings (Egypt).
Interestingly enough, it was the eleventh chapter of Daniel with its detailed prophecy of about two hundred years of history that prompted the heathen philosopher Porphyry (third century AD) to attack the book of Daniel as a forgery. In his study, Porphyry established the fact that history corresponded closely to the prophetic revelation of Daniel 11:1-28, and the correspondence was so precise that he was persuaded that no one could have prophesied these events in the future. Accordingly, he solved the problem by taking the position that the book of Daniel was written after the events occurred, that is, it was written in the second century BC. The king of the north was Iraq and the king of the south was consistently Egypt and countries south of Iraq. These historical events can be found in many books and commentaries.

:30b-45 The conquest of the Antichrist (head of Iraq) of the whole middle East and Jerusalem by the power of the Muslim in those nations. He will re-establish the `New Babylonian Empire'. Deception of Muslims in the removal of the el aqsa mosque (daily sacrifice stopped) and the building of the temple of God in its place. A period of great persecution of saints and godly Christians. Worldly and sleeping Christians deceived. Peace and security in the middle East and surrounding countries controlled by the antichrist. Wars (terrorists, religious, civil, ethnic) with weapons of mass destruction killing a total of 1/4 of mankind in the period called the beginning of sorrows or 4th Seal. He will then reveal himself as god sitting in the Temple of God. Many false christs and false prophets with signs and wonders will testify that he is the Messiah or god. This deception will further destroy the faith of even the elect. Many Christians will bow down to worship him (an abomination to the Lord) and thus their salvation is destroyed (desolation of Christians). "And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him." Dan 11:45 (KJV)
:45 The endtime Antichrist will build the temple of God (tabernacles) between the 2 seas (i.e. Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea) on the Temple Mount (glorious holy mountain), thus the `Rock on the Mount' and the el aqsa mosque there must be removed. After that, his death will come and no one (including Satan the devil himself) can help him, for he will destroyed by the brightness of the glorious coming of the Lord Jesus at Rapture (6th Seal). After Rapture, his dead body will be used by the devil for the incarnation to become that horrifying `Beast'. This will be the beginning of the period of the wrath of Satan or the 7th. Seal.
