  1. Goodbye (6/9/07)

Before she was fired
For thievery Kate
Gave Jane's stuff to me.
I am wearing
All Jane's clothing now.
Bright athletes' outfits
With stripes down the arms
And pantlegs and yet
She was a smoker
Courting death for
Many years. o well,
I was a swimmer.

  2. Our Table (6/9/07)

Roddick won the first two sets
But he lost the third, Lyle said.
He wins the match, said Mary.
What? What? how do you know?
He was losing the third.
Steven said, I need something to drink.
He wins, said Mary. It was
In the Beacon. She and Lyle
Shared a laugh.
I need coffee and water and milk.
Me too, said Dave, a big glass of milk.
And to Mary, did you ever see
The Quiet Man? o the best, the best
Movie ever, she said. that fight -
O Victor Mcwhattsis and the little one
Barry Fitzgerald. Did you
Take your noon meds? Linda
wanted to know. I left them
Here on the table for you.
And all four grinned and said
I don't remember. I don't know.

  3. Chitchat (06/13/07)

We left the dining hall together
Celeste limping and I
In my chair; I fully dressed
And she in her pretty robe
Pale yellow with tiny blue flowers.
She is given to protesting small things:
I am shocked that they do not warm
Our dinner rolls. And paper napkins.
Where else would you use paper napkins.
This morning she mentions a friend
Who is looking for a place like this.
He wants to know what we do, she says,
And I say we get together and
Remember what life was like
Before we were captives.

  4. Saturday Morning (06/16/07)

Traffic below us
But nothing along our road
This morning, all
The giant earthmovers
Stand still and so when Jack
Finds his way to the rockers
On the front porch
There is nothing for him to do
But park his cane, tilt
His ball cap over his eyes
And listening to stray finches
Go softly off to sleep.

  5. Hohum (06/21/07)

Penetrating the shade
Of the beach umbrella the sun
Beat down on three old ladies
Yawning away this afternoon.
O suddenly, said Sheila,
I wanted a Bloody Mary.
Yes, said Minnie, remember
Stirring with the celery stalk.
We could do that here,
Said Eileen, but somehow
It doesn't seem right.
Did you see Mary's blue Crocs?
Sheila asked. Well, yeah
But what do Crocs have to do
With Bloody Marys Minnie
Wanted to know. O just that
Crocs don't belong here either.

  6. Sadie Looks for Something (06/21/07)

Sadie wheeled out of her room
Into the hallway and sat looking out
The door into the parking lot
For a long time before she
Locked the wheels of her chair
And slowly and painfully stood up.
Groaning she turned to face
The name to the right
Of her door. It was at eye level.
She stood quite still
For a short time and then
Painfully, slowly she sat,
Unlocked her wheels, turned
Her chair and went back
Into her room where the TV
Was tuned to Judging Amy.

  7. Our Table (06/26/07)

What's her name? Lyle asked.
The drinks girl? Her name
Is La Shondra. Why o why
Can't I remember their names,
The workers? But last night
At my bedtime I remembered
And I could tell you all the names
Of all our neighbors in Iowa
In the thirties. Why is that?
Dave said, Every neighbor?
For a short time and then
Dang right, Lyle said. Well, me too
Dave said, though not in Iowa.
And they shared a smile.

  8. What are you gonna do? (06/26/07)

Well Steven lost another tooth
Tonight at dinner. we had him
Put it in a paper pill cup.
When it was clear he had
No pockets I opined, you are
Interesting as a dinner companion.
Lyle said, but we were eating
Cottage cheese and melon pieces.
and Dave said, what are you
Gonna do, what can you do?

  9. What's for Supper? (7/11/07)

LaTina found Mary
Slumped in her chair.
'My left knee popped.'
She ran for ice,
Filled a plastic glove,
Tied it off and laid it
On the swelling knee.
'Lift your feet,' LaTina cried
As she ran Mary to supper.
Later the weird icebag
Fell off the knee and Dave yelled,
'God almighty what's on my foot?'
We all loved the iced hand and -
'Actually ,' Mary said, 'my knee
Feels a whole lot better.'

  10. The Building Stretches and Grows (07/20/07)

It was a ballet of
Fifteen men in rhythmic
Stop and start, pouring a ribbon
Of concrete, leveling, smoothing,
And now the Nijinski man
On his knees smoothing while
The Pittsburgh truck breathes,
Breathes actually sounds like
Breathing, Lyle says and drums
In the background. One dancer
With a trowel on a long pole
Stands alone and suddenly
It is done. The music, the dance:
The flooring for the new addition.

  11. Remembering heroes (7/23/07)
Dave asks me, Is it
True, is Ellie near
Death? And I say yes
And he says Jesus how,
O Jesus how that poor
Lovely woman has
Suffered: Cleopatra
On her barge you know.
When she was pushed past us,
Past our table I would
Always say please.
To her. I said more than
Have a nice day, I said
Have a nice day, please.
He turned and said, did you
Ever see Lou Gehrig, Lyle,
And Lyle said, no but I saw
Babe Ruth play and Ty Cobb.
We were so quiet, thinking
of Ellie with Lou Gehrig's
Wasting illness, of Cleopatra
Being wheeled to lunch
On her barge, or so Dave joked
And now, he says, she is not expected
To last the day. Today.

  12. Suppertime (07/27/07)

Beans beans, sang out John Wayne
The musical fruit, growled Jimmy Cagney
The more you eat, sang Cher
The more you toot. All tables
Chimed in and laughter that gift
Waved through the hall and then
Mae West insinuated, beans beans -
Over giggles and cheers Sly Stallone
Roared, it's gonna be a long night, folks.

  13. For Months Norma Did Glide (07/26/07)

For months Norma did glide
Through the hallway in
Her floorlength gowns,
Every inch a diva from
Her cinnamon hair to her pumps.
When I learned she had sung
All over the world I asked
What roles? Her blank stare
Shut me up. I never asked again.
And now she never uses her cane,
Never walks anywhere. Linda says
Norma has discovered the
Wheelchair. And Norma sits
In the lobby by the fish tank.
O yes she says, I sang in Russia,
I toured Italy and France,
Performed in England. She wears
Carpet slippers, has let her hair
Go white. Her speaking voice
Is musical. She has an air.
However, says Dave, I just
Do not envision her as Mimi.

  14. Such Excitement (08/17/07)

There they stood,
Mom and her two fawns,
Looking at me. I didn't
Breathe. We didn't move
And then they walked away
Away. Two hours later
There were more and Linda
Found the salt lick
Looking now like bark:
Many teeth marks, black
In color. She stared at me.
I told Linda as if to say,
"Where are the apples? Three
Were all I had. Linda placed
Them in the grass behind
The fireplug, along the woods
And in the open. I told Bill
Two babies.Their mom,
She isn't limping now.
O no he said. you saw
A different mom. He stood
Holding a paint brush,
Balancing a tray on one hip,
And last night a ten-point buck
Tripped the light outside
My garage. I was doing dishes.
The light came on. I looked
Down and there he was
Looking up at me. Why, I said
Are we so interested in them?
Because despite all we have
Done to them, there they are.
Because. he smiled, because
They are so beautiful.

  15. Fish Dinner (9/24/07)

Lyle cut up fish for Steven
And said, 'Here's your mayo for it,'
And Mary said quietly,
'Tartar sauce'
And he said,
'We should all be thankful
Mary is here to correct us.'

  16. Old People Know Better

They should keep the
Developing addition as
A sculpture, Lyle says. He says
I told their boss, don't have
Your boys up on the steel
When there is lightning,
But he laughed and he said
We keep track. We know
Where the storm is. We're okay.
Us they put in the hallway
During the tornado scare
But the boys, Minnie says to Lyle,
They are up on the bare steel
Of the new roof. O, I am sure.
Dave says to all, they are down now.
Lyle laughs. Down or dead, he says.
Dave says to all,
They are up on the bare steel.

  17. Tania's Walk (08/19/07)

After each meal she paces
All the hallways. Today
She went outside, found
My windspinner in pieces,
Brought it in to me. She
Covers her mouth with one hand,
Taps my arm with the other.
I heard there is a bus stop,
She whispers. I thought, I will,
I must get on a bus and go.
My daughter says, you better not
Go, Ma, the cops would
Bring you back. But I would
Be independent again for a
Little while. Tania walks on,
Saying, my daughter said,
Where would you go, Ma
Where would you go?

  18. Bingo Again (08/19/07)

Minnie sits beside me.
Slow going. Postage stamp,
Four corners. Snot lady, she says.
Betty? I ask, placing a blue chip
On B 13. Yes, Betty. She got a watch
From me, did I tell you? No.
Well her battery ran out so
I loaned her a watch to have
By her bed so she would know
When to come to meals and such.
And then one day I saw her
Wearing the watch and
I asked for mine back. Your what?
She wanted to know. My watch,
I told her. It's gone, Betty says.
Somebody took it. Well, I think
She prolly gave it to a
Grandchild and forgot. I have
Other watches. It's OK. She
Doesn't have much. I don't mind.
It's OK. I bet she just forgot.

  19. Our Table: Lyle in his hundreth Year(08/19/07)

At breakfast Lyle said,
I didn't sleep a wink
All night. They didn't
Make my bed right.
Andrea did it right so they
Moved her to al himer.
And last night they
Had no tomato soup.
The night before they
Ran out of lettuce. I
Could jump off the bridge.
Now there's no grapefruit.
Why wait until you run out
Before you order fresh?
This morning no Cheerios,
No dang Rice Crispies.
If they want me outa here,
Tell me. I won't stay where
I am not wanted. No way.
Before lunch I handed Lyle
A Hefty sandwich bag
Holding four German cookies.
Grudgingly he bit into one.
I like this cookie, he said.
On his crusty old face
A little smile began and -
'Thanks, These are good cookies.'

  20. In the Dirt (10/13/07)

This morning? La Tania said,
At the dementia unit? they found
A guy outside lying face down
In the dirt. I said, it was 34 degrees
Last night. I know, she said and
Started to make my bed. I said,
Wait a minute. you mean he was
Dead? O yeah. How did he get outside
The locked area? nobody knows
But he was always walking, you
Couldn't get him to sit down even
To eat. She left and I thought
He was looking for death and when
He found death he could lie down.

  21. October (10/16/07)

The woods are copper and
You can drink the air and the
Tall stand of pines by the
Employees parking lot is
Whispering about winter.

But there is hope , for the
Indians are two up on Boston
And the Browns won last sunday and
Ohio can always, always hope.
Well, maybe, Lyle says, maybe the Series.

  Friday Afternoon (10/19/07)

Side by side in our chairs
With black clouds boiling
Overhead we talked about
Simple facts in our lives.
Dave had spent his early
Afternoon on the toilet. I was
Fighting sleepiness. Behind us
Dried cornstalks whispered and
We admired the display of big
Pumpkins until someone
Called us in to happy hour
Where songs were sung and we
Had plates of cheese and crackers
With, and this was the big deal,
Cans of Coors Light and throughout
The largely silent gathering
Memories gathered and clamored.
Yeah, dave said with a wry smile-
Good night, Irene, o yeah.
