I "appropriated" these knives under the pretence of sharpening them for Cherelynn's parents. They were... Icky, when I got them. Orange actually. I recently found out that they had spent some time on a fishing boat in the distant past, so who knows what that was lurking under the handles.
I ripped off the old handles and soaked them in vinegar, which removed the majority of the rust. I have scanned the underside of the handles that were touching the blade, just to give an impression of what I was dealing with. I wish I had taken a "before" picture.
The handles are just stained maple, with brass pins. Nothing fancy, as I suspect they are destined for life in a camp trailer.
Finishing the blades were the toughest part of the whole endeavor. I must have sanded these things for a solid week. I wanted them to be pretty again.
End result: Sharp and shiny. Just what the doctor ordered. To quote Norman as I returned them; "Did you have them chromed?" [me grinning]
