Our Shrines to Loved Ones

I've found some rather interesting grave decorations in my travels. They're often very original, and always very sad. I wish to offer this page as a tribute to those who have passed on and left behind loved ones who obviously cherish their memories and miss them very much.

Long ago grave markers were often fancy sculptures. The very wealthy could afford to have an artist sculpt a statue of the actual person. Nowdays you don't see that very often, probably because of cost. But there are still some beautiful tributes. Photographs are very popular, as are stones carved with the favorite things of the person who passed on.

Here are some of my favorites, or memorials that particularly touched my heart. These cemeteries ranged from Pennsylvania to Georgia.

This carefully tended grave in a mountain cemetery is always covered with flowers. Sometimes it is laid out like a miniature garden.

This colorful grave with its cheerful decorations that a child would love marks the final resting place of a little Appalachian mountain girl.

(Thanks to my friend S. who not only helps me with Irish dance technicalities but who also got me hooked on this interesting hobby.)
