It�s quite disappointing to hear such a world weary statement but then he spits out: �I think musically we�ve always done what we wanted regardless of what people might think. We�ve never been told what to do by any label or any record guy.� Now this is more like it! He continues: �I can�t remember any instance where we�ve had a guy go, �well you need to do that or this.� It�s just never happened and everything that we�ve done has been the band�s decision. And maybe that�s just luck because I do know other bands who�ve been forced to do stuff. Musically we�ve never been forced to do anything.� So you�ve always been free to do as you wish? �Yeah,� he laughs, �all of our mistakes have been our own!� Unprompted he brings up the release of �Host� in 1997, the record that many critics compared to stadium techno group, Depeche Mode and the one that helped divide fans and says: �It was a massive change of direction and I can understand why it put some people off but if you listen to that album now the songs aren�t drastically different from the songs on we�d been doing before, or now. It�s only really the production that�s different on that album. We were aware something had gone awry. Musically it was a gamble that we made when most music fitted into little boxes and we just thought, �well, we�ll do it anyway�. In retrospect I�m still glad we did the record, I just wish we�d done it as a side project or something outside of Paradise Lost. There was no intention to alienate anyone we wanted to try something different and ultimately it wasn�t for everyone. When you work with computers in music you can end up adding far more than you actually need and we�ve learned about that now. You�ve got all this technology available so you tend to think, �let�s just add everything,� and it�s just not required; especially with heavy music.� [NEXT] [PREV] [MUSIC] [HOME] |
