Julena is the founder and director of Dancers of the Harem, the largest and longest continually active Middle Eastern Dance Troupe in Georgia. It is based in Marietta and has 21 active members.
She began her study of this dance in 1974, started teaching in 1976, and formed the troupe in the late 70's. This troupe has been continually active for over 25 years and meets every week in her home studio - an oda - or harem room. She coordinates and MC's all the performances for the troupe. She has performed at numerous international conferences in various states for the American Cancer Society, cultural events, civic groups, arts festivals, private parties, and homes for the elderly. She has attended more than 100 seminars throughout the United States and Egypt.
Julena has won two professional costume design contests - the first in Fort Lauderdale and the second in Atlanta, "Greatest Sew on Earth" at the World Congress Center.
She is experienced in photographing belly dancers and has photographed the Rakkasah West Festival for several years.
She is best known for triple sword routine and was featured on the video "Great American Belly Dancer" where she balanced three swords with five candles on each blade.
When asked what part of Middle Eastern dance gives her the greatest pleasure, she said: "I get cute, little caterpillars and watch them turn into beautiful butterflies."
