"Once Upon a Time..."

Our next performance venue began as a creative arts activity where students from Dance I, II and III participated in the (2nd ever at DHS) winter concert designed to allow students to create and perform their own choreographies. Held at the Brock Performing Art Center we invited the parents to witness the culmination of our creative process.
Performance opportunites are growing at DHS. Marking the first occasion during the 2002-2003 school year we hosted the 1st festival ever at DHS...Please keep reading to see what legacy we are creating for students!

2002--The 1st performance began at 7:00 with the husband and wife guest artists, BJ and Sean Sullivan dancing a Gerri Houlihan piece. Next, a couple from the UNCG grad program presented a very stirring piece choreographed by BJ. The next piece was choreographed by Terri Winchell, our teacher, danced by the Dance II & III class. Mrs. Winchell then danced a solo piece to a Bach Suite. A Dance III student, J. Lord presented her first group dance work called "Cry" and lastly 40 student dancers from the workshop earlier that morning performed their manipulated BJ & Sean phrases (see Creating) to a classical piece of music selected by Mr. Sullivan.

Each year we have invited an artist to work with the area dance students in an environment which is nonjudgemental, noncompetitive and open minded! Typically, we have a mini performance, master technique and composition classes, an informal showing of the classwork and a showcase of student work in the afternoon. In 2006, thanks to the efforts of the Davie County Arts Council, we actually were able to have the NC Dance Festival folks dance at the Brock in an evening performance! next year, they will return ina matinee performance.
