| WINTER DANCE CONCERT December 2002 "Once Upon a Time..." expresses a variety of fairy tale classics told through the lens of modern dance. " I wanted my students to take a familar story and tell it in dance terms, to make meaning. Students had the flexibility to place their fairy tale in any time period, whereas costumes, music, and movement had to support their choices." |

| Last year was marked extremely successful with the celebration of the First Regional High School Dance Festival. The dance program, in it's 2nd year, was awarded a grassroots grant from the Davie County Arts Council to bring something new and innovative to our community. We presented a modern dance venue including master classes and an informal perfomance at the Brock Performing Arts Center on September 20, 2002. Our guest artists Bj and Sean Sullivan from UNCG and NCSA, respectively took the 102 high school dancers, from Davie H.S., Mt.Tabor H.S., and Reynolds H.S., through a series of elaborate floor exercises based on release technique as well as Bartenieff Fundamentals. After warmup we learned a variety of combinations incorporating movements that took us easily from the floor to standing and back to the floor. Students learned to move from their core in a silky, seemingly effortless way, though when asked to reflect on their experiences during the festival they revealed that they were quite sore from moving in new ways! Next, the guest artists each taught an original movement phrase to the dancers to manipulate and teach to a partner...to be presented later that night in an informal performance as an "entrance and exits dance"! After the festival it was back to class to continue our journey into space, time and energy...next project Winter Dance Concert. After brainstorming tons of ideas we selected Fairy Tales to express in movement terms for what became "ONCE UPON A TIME..." presented at the Brock Performing Arts Center in December before exams! |
