Nano-liquids preparation,
characterization and processing

Magnetic nano-particles dispersions in liquids, forming the so called "Nano-liquids", or "Ferrofluids", or "Magnetic fluids", were prepared, characterized and processed using physical methods, during the past decades, in our department.
Characterization refers to the determination of nano-liquid density, magnetization curve, initial magnetic susceptibility, saturation magnetization, dynamic viscosity curve, initial dynamic viscosity coefficient, saturation viscosity coefficient - the main characteristics of this kind of liquid. A special magnetometer (based on Gouy's method), a capillary and a vibration viscometer, were design and made , and a MathCAD software were written for experimental data processing.
For the nano-particles themselves, the saturation magnetization, their distribution functions by physical, magnetic and hydrodynamic dimensions are determined, using the previously presented methods and software.
Because all these characteristics differ according to the asked application or study, several
physical methods were used in order to controll them, to obtain the desired characteristics: nano-particles diffusion in the basic liquid, forced evaporation, ultracentrifugation and high gradient magnetic separation.
As a result,
special nano-liquids were obtained: with high saturation magnetization, with high ratio of the magnetic phase, with high or low viscosity, cvasi-monodisperse, with a given distribution function of the particles, etc.
Theoretical bases and experimental results were obtained for each measuring device, method and type of nano-liquid.

For the time being,
two national research consortia were established, related to this project, in which we are a part:
