About the DYP

Dalmarnock Youth Project

Scottish Charity Number: SC 029368

The Dalmarnock Youth Project (DYP) is a local voluntary organisation, established in 1984 through the Urban Programme. The Project currently receives funding from Glasgow City Council Grants to Voluntary Organisations, The East End Social Inclusion Partnership, BBC Children in Need, and the Pastoral Care Trust. The remit of the Project is to work with local young people between the ages of 12 and 24.

The DYP is managed by a local voluntary Management Committee, elected annually at the Projects AGM and responsible for monitoring and developing the work and services of the DYP. The members of the Management Committee have a responsibility to the Projects funders to ensure its resources are being adequately managed.

The DYP currently employs three full time youth workers, one part time youth worker, and a part time administration worker. The Project is also supported by local volunteers. The Senior Youth Worker is responsible for the support and supervision of all staff and for co-ordinating and developing the strategic work of the DYP.

The DYP is best described as a detached youth work project, concerned with establishing positive relationships with local young people on their own territory and then responding to their educational, recreational and social needs. The DYP prioritises contact with young people who are not receiving a service or support from other agencies or youth organisations, and is concerned with the effects of social exclusion as experienced by local young people.

The Youth Project encourages the notion of youth empowerment and promotes a community development approach to its work with local young people. This is reflected both in young people being able to access resources and services for themselves from the DYP and other relevant agencies, and in encouraging local people to volunteer and develop youth work opportunities at the DYP. The relevant social and communication skills that are useful to this process are often initiated via the Projects group work programmes where young people are encouraged to take responsibility for decision-making and group development.

There are 5 main elements to the work of the DYP:

  • Street Work
  • Group Work
  • Individual Support Work
  • Community Development Work (where the Project supports young people to take positive action in order to address relevant issues and concerns)
  • The Dalmarnock Young Peoples Drop in Facility.
Dalmarnock itself is situated within the heartland of Glasgows East End Social Inclusion Partnership Area. The local community is therefore characterised by various social and economic difficulties that are often most severely experienced by the young people within the community. The DYPs detached youth work remit therefore places the Project in a crucial position to work with the most socially excluded young people within Dalmarnock.

Streetwork

The DYP remains primarily a detached youth work project, and this involves the youth work staff contacting young people through our ongoing Streetwork programme. This valuable asset to the work of the DYP often involves encouraging young people to access our own services at Millerfield Road, but it can also involve supporting young peoples access to other services and agencies, depending on the issues raised with the youth worker.

The DYP street workers are there to listen to all local young people, without making judgement. Through the relationships built with a wide spectrum of the young people of Dalmarnock, the street is often the place where much of our youth work is initiated.
