State Republican Platforms: Fiscal Responsibility
These are excerpts from Platforms and Resolutions passed by various state Republican parties this year. They show how far out of the mainstream are the extremists that have taken over the Republican party.
Republicans: Undermining Fiscal Responsibility:
-
Arkansas: We believe that it is essential to lower, or at least
index, the
capital gains tax so that the federal and state governments do not
continue
to tax inflation rather than real income.
- California: To create a society modeled on privatization,
modernization,
technology and volunteerism to reduce the size of government, we
support
restrictions on the power of state agencies and unelected officials
to enact
regulations on their own. We support Republican proposals for a cap
on all
taxes federal, state and local combined.
- Maine: [W]e advocate: ... Limiting government taxation at all levels;
federal, state, and local combined, in peacetime, to 25% of all
personal
income.
- Nevada: We oppose any federal taxes on gaming or mining.
We support abolishing the current IRS system.
- North Carolina: Taxes on capital gains take away better jobs from
working
families. We support eliminating this jobs destroying tax.
- South Carolina: The Party clearly understands that capital gains
taxes are
particularly pernicious in discouraging new investment and job
creation.
Studies also show progressive income taxes are
economically
more harmful than flat rate taxes raising the same amount of revenue.
A
growth-maximizing strategy calls for low taxes, and a low proportion
of
expenditures going for growth-inhibiting transfer payments.
- Texas: We support fundamental tax reform, including such measures as
cutting individual tax rates, the elimination of the marriage penalty
tax
and the death (inheritance) tax, and elimination of capital gains and
corporate income taxes.
We urge that the IRS be abolished and the Sixteenth Amendment
to the
United States Constitution be repealed.
- Washington: At the national level, we support: ... The replacement
of the
current graduated income tax structure with a simplified tax system
such as
a flat tax or national sales tax.
At the national level, we support: ...a substantial
reduction
of the capital gain taxes.*Wisconsin: Specifically, we call for the
elimination of the capital gains and business personal property
taxes.
- Wisconsin: Be it further resolved that there be no tax on
estate,
gifts, capital gains, interest, and dividends.
- Texas: The Party calls for the United States monetary system to be
returned
to the gold standard.
Since the Federal Reserve System is a private corporation,
has no
reserves, and is not subject to taxation or audit, we call on
Congress to
abolish this institution and reassume its authority enumerated by
Article I,
Section 8 of the United States Constitution, for the coinage of money.
- Iowa: We call for the repeal of the 16th amendment and abolition of
federal, state, and local income taxes, and for the return to the
revenue
generating system outlined in the original Constitution.
- Nevada: We support legislation to sunset the current Federal Tax
Code by
Dec. 31, 2001.
- Minnesota: We support the following reforms: ... Abolishing the
current IRS
tax code and replacing it with a simpler, fairer tax system that
favors a
national sales tax or a flat tax.
