State Republican Platforms: Social Security
These are excerpts from Platforms and Resolutions passed by various state Republican parties this year. They show how far out of the mainstream are the extremists that have taken over the Republican party.
Republicans: Weakening Social Security:
-
Texas: The Party supports an orderly transition to a system of
private
pensions based on the concept of individual retirement accounts, and
gradually phase out the Social Security tax.
- Nebraska: We encourage privatization of the Social Security System.
- Iowa: We demand the right to place a portion of our Social Security
contributions into a privately controlled account. In addition, we
support
changes, which allow workers to opt out of the Social Security system
in
favor of personal retirement accounts.
- Indiana: To these ends, we propose: ... Development of personal
options for
social security to stabilize the system and allow individuals to reap
the
true retirement benefits of their personal social security
contributions.
- Iowa: We believe that Personal Savings Accounts should be phased in
for
younger workers as a replacement for the current Social Security.
- Minnesota: We support the following reforms: ... Supporting
financially
sound Social Security and Medicare systems. This includes individual
discretion and ownership on a portion of Social Security
contributions,
while maintaining our obligations to older Americans.
- Missouri: Therefore, the Missouri Republican Party supports:
...offering
people the option of exercising individual control over a portion of
their
FICA contributions.
- Washington: At the national level, we support:
... A
private option for Social Security.
- Wisconsin: Now, therefore, be it
resolved that the Republican Party of Wisconsin, in convention
assembled,
does hereby resolve the following: ... That each participant in the
Social
Security system be given an individual Social Security account, that
the
funds in the Social Security trust fund be allocated among such
accounts,
and that each account holder be permitted to designate where those
funds are
to be invested (as is done with IRA's).
