Another term for an Israelite. Also the name of the language of the Jews. ISRAELI A citizen of the modern state of Israel. ISRAELITES Another name for the children of Israel. (The offspring of Jacob.) JEW From the word Judah. A nation and a religion - a term used of any descendant of Jacob. KINGDOM OF JUDAH The southern kingdom comprising the tribes of Judah and Benjamin after the split. KINGDOM OF ISRAEL After the split, the northern kingdom of ten tribes, sometimes represented by Ephraim. PALESTINE Traditionally the land of Israel's foes, the Philistines. After the Roman conquest of 70AD, Palaestina was the name of the Roman province and latterly Palestine during the time of the Ottoman Empire (1517-1917) and the British Mandate (1917-1948.)
