| March 1, 2009 - Friend from Coshocton comes to visit. She says that, according to the newspaper, our county is broke, and if too many people can't pay their property taxes, the county will be in deep do-do. And they can't afford the costs of prosecutions. Revelation. Maybe that's why they don't want to hear about miserable dogs. Litigation costs. And that's why they are now enforcing the ORC as pertaining to kennel licenses. And why the warden really wanted to take Shorty to the pound where they could collect his redemption fee. So now I need to find rescue workers who can help get dogs off the property without litigation. Keeping my fingers crossed! After she leaves, I try to find a rescue worker's group that caters to the emotional toll, but no luck. I feel like I'm heading for a meltdown. It's like something snapped the day of the dog fight, and I can't stop looking for a way to help those dogs. March 2, 2009 - Low of 11 degrees last night. Bitter wind. Chill factor below zero. This morning, Nikita gets me up early. I hear a lot of yapping next door. It's just after seven AM. Looks like Chloe is eating off the ground. Then I see the Mrs. She must be feeding. About 15 minutes later, I happen to look into the garage, and there's Red Pup and Shorty nosing around in the empty dog food bags. Didn't they just eat? Shorty looks up at me for a few seconds, and then away they go. Red Pup out of sight, but Shorty goes into my building. I run for my camera, but he's gone when I return. I hear the Mrs. Maybe she's calling them. Not in the house five minutes before Twinkle is yapping at the back door. I see both dogs in my back yard. Grab camera and slip out onto the deck. Shorty has gone through the fence and up the hill, but Red Pup is at the corner of the yard, barking at me. I get a couple of pictures of him, or her. Big belly. Shorty comes back, poops and then comes through the fence. It would be nice to get a picture of both of them, well onto my property. They're coming closer, nosing around the heat pump where I can see them through the lattice. I'm making them nervous, I guess. They head for home and I get a photo of both of them as they are leaving my yard. Dogs going ballistic in the bay window. I take a look and see a spotted dog in my driveway, beyond the spruce tree. Can't see who it is. I get my camera and coat and run out, but he's gone. Now the ruckus is next door. He must have gone home. It's not even ten AM, and I've had three visitors. What will be going on while I'm at work??? I go out to the garage to feed cats, hoping the dogs don't eat it, and see blood smeared all over the inside of the crockery dish on the floor. Someone obviosly has an injury. I suspect it's one of the dogs that was in the garage earlier. Maybe Shorty got hurt escaping from his pen, or maybe there was a fight. March 3, 2009 - Tuesday, my day off. Someone working on the road with a grader, making lots of racket right in front of the neighbors' property. Dogs going ballistic, of course. Later, I take a look out the bedroom window, and see the spotted puppy on top of the box in the pen, climbing over the fence and onto the steep roof of the tall box outside of it. Now he's on the roof and trying to figure out how to get down. It's a hefty drop. Looks like a calico cat, without my binocs. I get a photo of him on the roof. Try for one of his landing, but no time to focus, so that one's a dud. He made it okay. Now he's running around with Red Pup, and playing with everybody. The grader is back. Spotted puppy is back in pen, so Mrs. must be home. Now another puppy is running around with Red Pup. Red pup M is tied where Brownie used to be. Not a sound from the tool shed. I wonder why. I get a picture of Star leaning out over the fence into the next pen, barking at the grader. Only one hind foot on the roof of her box. Scary. March 4, 2009 - Bubblegum on top of his own box, which has been moved a little way from where it used to be. Later, he is running loose with Red Pup. They're at my side dog yard fence barking at me. March 5, 2009 - I let dogs out before going to work and hear a ruckus. Bubblegum and Red Pup are in my back yard. When I get back with camera, Bubble is up the hill pooping on his own turf. I get a photo of Red Pup barking at us, and Twinkle with her feet on the fence, barking right back. March 8, 2009 - I'm in the front dog yard, and see the Mrs. in her back yard. Shorty and Red Pup are running loose. My Dals are in the side yard and they're all sniffing noses through the fence. Nothing I can do. A little later, dogs still loose, no sign of the Mrs. Red Pup is barking at me. Then he goes up the fenceline, around the corner post, and into my back yard. I let him know I don't like it, and he leaves. No Creamy. I'm thinking about puppies in the shed. No sun since they were born. Won't they get rickets or something? Evening, and those loose dogs are still causing a ruckus. March 9, 2009 - Pretty cold tonight. I hear yipping in the shed. Sounds like puppies. March 10, 2009 - I let Snoop into the side yard and suddenly there's a bit of excitement. Red Pup and Brownie are at the fence, the three of them with their noses glued together. Bless Snoopdog! His tail is going like 60. Not long after, I hear the Mrs. calling, "lubba-lubba-lubba-lubba," or whatever it is that she says. She used to round the cats up at night like that, and I never could make it out. Later, Red Pup is at Red Dog's pen barking at me. No sign of Red Dog or Brownie. Afternoon and the well guys are here. I've got mud coming from my faucets again, and I want it fixed! We're in the side yard looking at the well and Bubblegum and Red Pup are being a noisy nuisance. Red Dog is in pen with a horrid big fat shaggy tether around his neck. It's pretty short, too. I try to shut the dogs up so we can talk. Finally the Mrs. shows up with a bag of dog food and tries to get them to follow her. Bubblegum isn't having any of it, and runs up the fence, around the corner and into my back yard. I'm trying to get the gate unlocked so the well guys can look at the back yard, but no go. Meanwhile, the Mrs. is hot on Bubble's trail, going across the back yard. We go around front. Bubble is in the driveway still barking at us. We go around to the back yard, and there's no sign of the Mrs. I don't know where she went. March 11, 2009 - I come home for my break from work; it's almost three PM. I let Snoop and Liver into the side yard and hear Red Dog. He's outside his pen with a conglomeration of stuff around his neck. I can see a chain attached to him. It goes straight up the side of the pen and over the top. It's holding his head up and his bark sounds strangled. I run for the camera. Red Pup is with him. I get two good shots. I think I'll try one from the deck, but when I get there, the Mrs. is in the back yard. She's trying to get the dog loose, even goes into the pen. I wonder if she saw me taking pictures. Too bad. Next time I look, the dog is in the pen, standing on top of his box. He's restless. Wants back out. I think she shortened his chain. March 12, 2009 - Red Pup is wearing a collar now. Looks like there's a tag on it, too. That's a first. She must be getting nervous. But, why is she letting the dog run loose? March 13, 2009 - The coverings are pretty much gone from the rabbit pen. Looks like it's full of food bags. Haven't seen the puppies that were in one of the pens last weekend. I hear an awful ruckus next door. I go check, and there's Creamy! She runs out, squats, and then flops over on her back for Red Pup M. Then I see the Mrs., too. When I drive by, I see her and Creamy in the yard. March 14, 2009 - I have to go to Coshocton. It would be nice if I could get my film developed but there are six exposures left. I take the camera with me, and get two photos as I go by; one of the pens and one of Yellow Dog lying on his horrible box. It has no roofing, just bare boards, and one of them is missing. I hate to think what it's like for him when it rains! He's looking poorly. Don't want to hang around for four more pics, so the film is still in the camera. |
