Fourteen articles of capitulation for the surrender were worked out at the Augustine Moore House on an estate near Yorktown on October 18.

Article Three called for the British garrison at Yorktown to march out at 2 o'clock October 19 "with shouldered arms, colours cased and drums beating a British or German march."

When the surrender ceremony was ready to take place, Cornwallis was not there.  His deputy, General Charles O'Hara, explained to Washington that Cornwallis was indisposed.  Washington directed O'Hara to receive his orders from General Benjamin Lincoln.

The surrendering army marched onto the field to the tune of
"Down Derry Down." The old English air had several sets of lyrics, including "The World Turned Upside Down."
