94 Christian HILL, b. 1770, d. 1834, m. 1794, (95) Catherine YEASLEY, b. 1774, d. 1823, d/o Michael and Magdalena (_____?) YEASLEY. In 4 Apr 1796 Christian bought a lot in Shepherdstown from John and Mary Unseld. Christian HILL appears on the Jefferson Co., VA, Personal Property Tax List for the years 1802-1804, and 1807 -1820. In all of those years with the excception of 1815, he was taxed for one male over 16yrs. of age. In 1815 he was taxed for two males over 16 yrs. of age, probably one of his adult sons living in his household, and probably Michael who is the first son to appear on the list as an independent adult. In the 1810 census there were 2 males 0-10 (John, Michael), 1 male 26-45 (Christian), 1 female 0-10 (Catherine, daughter), 1 female 16-25 (unnamed daughter?), 1 female 26-45 (Catherine, wife). In 1820 there was 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 and up, 1 female 0-10, and 1 female 45 and up. The five named children can be accounted for in the deed records of Jefferson  Co. There does not appear to be any other children. (WVJE7, 9, WVJEB10, 11, 13 p2)

94.1 John HILL. In 1808 John entered into a trust with Abraham HILL. John HILL appears on the Jefferson Co., Personal Property Tax List in 1810 with 1 white male over 16 and 1 horse, mare, etc., in 1814 with 1 white male over 16, 2 black males over 16, and 3 horses or other. After 1814, he disappears from the list, and probably migrated to KY,  where he appears  when he and his brother Michael sold a house and lot #25 on Princess St., in Shepherdstown for $85,  to his brother-in-law, William BOWEN in Sep 1827, part of the property left to him by his mother Catherine Yeasley HILL, left to her by her father, Michael YEASLEY. 94.2 Michael HILL: Michael HILL and John, his brother, sold a house and lot (#25) in Shepherdstown, on 22 Sep 1825. this land was given to Caty HILL, Michael's mother,  from her father, Michael YEASLEY, and equally divided among Caty's children at her death. John HILL had sold to Michael his share of the property. In the 1820 Jefferson Co. Census, Michael has 8 males, and 3 females in his household. Probably some of the 5 older males are workers of some sort. None of his children have identified. Michael HILL appears in the Jefferson Co., VA, Personal Property Tax list for the years 1816-1819, 1821-1828, and 1835, in the Northern District, which places him in Shepherdstown or vincinity. In 1816, he is taxed on 4 white males over 16;16; in 1827, 3 males; on 1818, 4 males; in 1822, 2 ; all other years, 1 white male. In 1821 and 1822 he has one black male between 12 and 16. In 1822 he is taxed on 7 horses, mares, colts, etc.; in 1823, 1; in 1824, 3; in 1825, 2; in 1826, 4; 1827, 5; 1828, 2; and in 1835, 2. He is absent from the tax list from 1829-1824, and disappears after 1835. (WVJE6 Bk 13 p250, 12, 13, WVJE9)

94.4 Jacob HILL, b. 6 Feb 1798, VA, d. 30 Sep 1878, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, m. Maria _____?, 6 Nov 1806, VA, d. 22 Feb 1879 in Shepherdstown.  Jacob was blacksmith. In 1850, they were living in Shepherdstown, and had 4 children. In 1810 Michael had 1 male 0-10, 3 males 16-18, 5 males 6-26, 2 females 0-10, and 1 feamle 16-26. In 1860, daughter Sarah V., and son Walter W., were living in the household, as was daughter, Elizabeth. In 1823 Jacob bought Lot 195 from Peter Streighter. On 1 Oct 1824 Jacob sold lot #195 in Shepherdstown fro $170, to B. T. Towner. Jacob bought lot #205 in Shepherdstown from R. D. and J. J. Shepherd. Jacob sold that lot to Albert HUMRICHOUSE. In 1870, Jacob was retired from blacksmithing, living with his wife and daughter, Elizabeth. He appears in the Personal Property Tax List , living in the Northern District, which was Shepherdstown or vincinity. He is taxed on 1 white male over 16 from 1831 to 1833, and no white males over 16 in 1826, and 1838 to 1841. In 1826, 1832 to 1834, and 1838-1841, he is taxed for 1 horse, mare, colt, or etc. In 1830 Jacob has 2 males under 5, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 50-60. In 1850 and 1870, he is a blacksmith in Shepherdstown. IN 1860, George R. STALEY, daughter Sarah V., and their son Walter are living with Jacob who is a retired blacksmith. They are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, in Shepherdstown.  (WVJE6, 10, 12, 13, 14 WVJEB4, 6 12 p451, 16 p141,142) Children:

94.4b Daniel A. HILL, b. c1828, VA, m. Susan J. _____?, b. c1835, VA. He was a merchant in Shepherdstown, WV, Jefferson Co., VA in 1860. In 1870, he was operating a country store in Arden District, Berkeley Co., WV. In 1860, James Welshans, a clerk, was in the household. In 1870, James M. Billmyer, a farm manager, Cora Billmyer, Mary Machey 12, Catherine McCan, 25, a domestic servant, with Henry McCan 1, and John B. McCan were in the household. Catherine and Henry McCan were black. John McCan was listed as a malatto. In 1880, they were living in Potomac, Jefferson Co. Mary E. HILL 23, b. WV, neice, Louisa McCann 42, and Mellie McCan 14, two black women were in the home. 94.4d Susan V. HILL, b. c1838 (gravestone 1835), VA, d. 1916, m. George R. STALEY b. c1835. Sarah and her son, Walter are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV. In 1860 George was a merchant living in Shepherdstown. They were living with Susan's father, Jacob. (WVJEB6 p195, WVJE13)
