| This also nails him on being prudent, respectable and even able to teach. Mr. Hunt is simply the clearest example in my mind of this problem. But the sad thing is, is that it is the norm! The other areas such as the ability to teach. Many of these men do not teach the truth. Or if they are trying to teach the Bible they don't look at it in light of its historic context both in terms of what the authors said (exegeting) and in terms of how other men have interpreted it. The Bible teaches that these truths are to be entrusted to able men. Our forefathers such as Calvin, and Luther and others were able men who stood for the truth. However, in most areas and especially in interpeting Scripture, the pastors do not listen to them. They use hermenutics and ideas that are only 200 years old instead of the time tested traditions that stand (for the most part) under the inspection of the Scriptures. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 1 Timothy 3:1-7 "It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household how will he take care of the church of God?), and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil." Theses are God's Words. |

| Another problem is that many of the pastors are too young to be pastors. This is a problem because many of our Christian Colleges offer ministry in the undergraduate level, and the training is usually separated from a solid church which can provide oversight for these pastors in training. Greyfriars a training center out of Christ Church Moscow, ID fixes this problem in grand way. As a result of being too young they are inexperienced in areas such as governing a family and leading a wife. This results in unruly children which results in disqualification from eldership. So the disqualification can be two fold. 1) If you don't have a wife and family you cannot lead. 2) If you do have a family and it is unruly you should not be in the position either. Regardless of what the congregation may think of you as a pastor. I will address this subject in more detail in the next week touching on some of the "untouched" issues. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I am going to assert another reason that this world is going to the dogs and the church is ineffective is due to the fact that our leaders do not live up to the standards put forth in this passage. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How is it that our leaders are not above reproach? Many times preachers in the churches and particularly in the Southern Baptist churches will use questionable methods to get people to come forward. One example I can think of is Georgia pastor who came to speak at Liberty University. I managed to lay hold of one of his tapes called "Should Christian's drink?" Now I am not going to state my position on this issue. However his text was Proverbs 20:1 which says: "Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler and whoever is intoxicated by them is not wise." After reading that passage he spent 30-60 minutes filling the people's heads with rhetoric and nonesense. The sermon was filled with more statistics and trends rather than Scripture. Of course who can blame him for not using Scripture. The Scripture does not support an prohibitionist position, and he was trying to say that it did. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| My point in using this example is this. He is an elder and for one who has studied the Scriptures as long as he has should know better than to lead people into a position that Scripture does not hold. He was being deceptive, that is not above reproach. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
