The Story of our Tiranga retold through Indian Stamps

In 1924 some workers of the Seva Dal devised a flag ceremony or dhvaja vandan. The same year Shri Shyamlal Gupta, composed Vijayi Vishva Tiranga Pyara, Jhanda Uncha Rahe Hamara. The song later became very popular and was subsequently made a part of the dhvaja vandan ceremony.

By 1930, the Swaraj - Flag had become very popular but there was discontent due to the communal interpretation of the flag colours. In view of these developments, the Congress committee appointed a seven member Flag Committee on April 2, 1931 comprising of the following

  • Dr. B. Pattabhi Sitaramayya (Convenor)
  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru
  • Sardar Vallabhabahi Patel
  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
  • Master Tara Singh
  • Dr. N. S. Hardikar
  • Dattatreya Balakrishna Kalekar

The committee reached a consensus that the 1921 flag colours had communal basis. The flag colours were changed to saffron for courage on the top, white for truth and peace in the middle and green for faith and prosperity at the bottom. The Charaka symbol was in blue in the centre.
