Jet Aircraft
Wapiti April 30, 1958 The jet aircraft was also introduced at the end of World War II. Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was the German jet fighter powered by two Junkers Jumo turbojets. The British introduced the Gloster Meteor powered by two Rolls-Royce Derwent 9 turbojets. This transition from a piston-engined aircraft to a jet aircraft is depicted in the stamp issued on April 30, 1958. The first aircraft depicted is the Westland Wapiti, a two seat general-purpose aircraft powered by 550 hp Bristol Jupiter VIII engine. It had a maximum speed of 217 km/h. The armament was a fixed Vickers machine gun and a Lewis gun mounted aft (behind). The second aircraft is the Hawker Hunter a single seater jet fighter powered by a Roll-Royce Avon Mk 207 turbojet. Its maximum speed is 1002 km/h and is armed with four 30-mm cannons.
