the story of flight: as told by the indian stamps yv jeppu |
| Parachute |
|
World War II and later saw the development of faster aircraft and new tactics in air warfare. The parachute was used to drop supplies and soldiers behind the enemy lines. Parachutes developed from the initial hemispherical dome shaped contraptions to the glider like shapes in use today. The earlier parachutes were very difficult to control and they swayed as they dropped down. The modern parachutes have slits, through which the air passes and gives it a sturdy shape like an aeroplane wing. The paratrooper can then control it like a hang glider. This development can be seen in the stamps issued on August 15, 1963 depicting the earlier model and on October 17, 1986 depicting the modern parachute. |
