"Bluetick Beagles"

12/29/01
I do animal rescue and a fellow rescuer asked if I had heard of this kind of Beagle? ...I said "You mean a mix of?" ...And she said "A guy called wanting to place a bluetick beagle pup and he has papers." ...I wonder if he has puppy store papers. ...But if you could enlighten me if this exists I would appreciate it. ...Thanks ahead of time.
...Deborah

Hello Deborah, ...Bluetick Beagles are a genuine beagle, though of a different strain, (ie:"Mottled", "Liver" or "Lemon" beagles). ...If I am not mistaken they were bred by a Captain of some kind in the southern US for their unusual "ticking" and coloration. Some call them "Blue Cap", or just "Blue". ...My landlord had one, no mistaking, all beagle, all the time. ..They are very handsome, unusual and some consider more valuable. ...In any case, as long as it comes from a reputable breeder, those papers should be real. ...To quote from my favourite Beagle Bible: "The blue color is not a color at all, but a dilution of one of the other colors. ...This gives the black saddle a blueish cast and the tan points a duller color." - page 214, "The New Beagle" written byy Judith M. Musladin, MD., purchased through Drs Foster and Smith Catalog.

"Restless Beagle"

11/28/01
Hi Christie, ...My beagle Zeke will be 18 months at the end of December. I got him from a reliable breeder and have had him since he was 10 weeks old. I thought I did a lot of research on beagles but I don't think I knew what I was getting into. ...I've taken him to obedience school and he listens when he is on a leash. However, in my home environment he is constantly and I mean constantly getting into everything. He digs and barks. He does not listen no matter how firm I am with him. He listens for a few seconds and starts in again. ...Discipline does not phase him. I am firm - I put him in his kennel when he doesn't listen, I've had a correction collar on him and used it in the house. I will not - what I consider - physically abuse him - I know some dog trainers use forms of discipline that I find abusive. He is lovable and affectionate and great with kids but he's a full time job. ...Do you have any suggestions? ...Thank you.
...Diane

Hello Diane, ...Beagles do require some patience, especially during the first two years. If he is housebroken and is obedient on the leash, you are doing good and it could be a start. ...Beagles have an affinity for food. I am guessing that is mostly what he is getting into. Try rearanging kitchen a bit. Put the trash can in cabinet with some way to secure it. Get all kinds of food things in closed metal or plastic containers and out of hound's reach. Discourage the kids from feeding him bits of their own meal at the table. ...Use the food thing to your advantage when training him. Find a favourite treat and use it ONLY when you want him to do something. You might want to try some thing called "click-training", of which I have only heard of that works wonders with hound dogs. ...Give him plenty of raw hide chew toys to tear up so they stay away from shoes, and other temptations. Our last beag, Barney loved to play with the "Kong", a rubber toy. The kids and Zeke could also play tug of war with a giant rope toy or the like. ...The rest of behavoir problems are basically a beagle thing also, but may take a little more patience and lifestyle adjustment on your family's part. ...Because they are hunting, tracking hounds, Beagles require lots of exercise or they will drive you crazy. At best, get him involved in a local beagle club so he can run with others of his kind on a real hunt. ...If you live in the country and have cooperative neighbors, take him beagling. That is, let him off leash and watch him flush out rabbits, squirrels and coons. Don't worry, he will come back home in time for supper. ...If you live in the City, look into visiting "Dog Parks". Beagles are well known for getting along with people and other dogs. The outing would be enjoyable for hound and human. ...If you live in Suburbs, get the kids to take him on a long walk everyday, if you can. And by all means let him participate in Camping trips, picnics, or any other outdoor activity. In any case, the more active he is during day, the less active (barking, playing) he will be at night. ...Beagles were born to bark, and there really is not much you can do about it. However, I have had some success with this one technique: Place your hand over his muzzle and press his face downward gently and hiss "Shhhhhh". It will work only long as you have your hand on his muzzle. Sorry, but they can't help giving in to the barking instinct. It used to drive me nuts, but Since Barney passed away, I would give anything to hear an "Arooooooo" late at night, or at any time. ...I personally wouldn't recomend a kennel as it would have worked by now if it ever was. It just may be making matters worse, making him more frustrated. Beagles are rather singleminded and independent, not known for "listening". They require some patience. On the plus side they are very friendly, gentle and lovable companions. You couldnt find a better dog for the kids. ...You may try to get in touch with your breeder or post a message on Beagle Junction.

"Where to find a Beagle ?"

9/06/01
Hi, I'm in San Antonio, ...looking at getting a beagle end of Sept-Nov. ...Just wondering if you know where I could get one? ...I'm new to this. ...But we love beagles, always have.
...Tracie

Hello, sorry took so long to answer. ...I hear beagles are in great demand in San Antonio and cost more. ...If you are after a good family dog, I recomend a Beagle Rescue Organization. ...Quality hunting beagles can be found there also. ...If you want a fresh pup, or are particular about breeeding stock, papers etc.., there are some reputable Kennels and Breeders not far from your area. ...It so happens I got a web page section devoted to Beagles in Texas ...Maybe the links listed will be of some help.

"Cyst"

4/18/01
My friend is going to give me her 4 year old beagle. ...She said he has had a cyst removed from his bum and that this is common with beagles. ...I can't find any info about this. If anyone can help please e-mail. ...Thank you.
...Jamie

Not to worry. ...Cysts are common with beagles. Most of them are benign and thought to be heriditary in origin. ...If you can move the lump around and it doesn't feel attached to the skin, muscle or bone underneath, it is most likely benign.Cancerous tumors are stiffer, and attached solid. ...Several of my Beags have had them and lived to a ripe old age. ...Our first beagle had a bunch of polyps removed. She developed more skin problems and was put on a special chicken and rice diet to clear it up. It worked and she shed some extra pounds, too. ...My favourite beagle, Susie had wierd bumps here and there, all benign. I only had to have one removed. It was hanging down from her belly, getting caught on things. However, she had heart problems in old age. It turned out a cyst had developed on a heart valve, causing problems and she died. It was a freaky, unfortunate thing. ...I am not really a veterinary expert. Just had lifetime experiences with 6 or seven beagles. This is just some general information I can pass along. ...Please consult a vet if you have any doubts.

"No Guarantee..."

4/16/01
Hi, ...My husband and I are thinking about getting a dog for our two sons 6 and 9. ...We are hesitant. We've had a bassett and a cocker (spaniel) a few years ago and had to get rid of them. ...I would hate to get one and have to get rid of it. ...We live in a house with a six foot fence. There are two beagles that live a block over and they are constantly getting out. ...We don't want a big dog. My oldest son wants (that) in the worst way. ...We have no family here in Colorado and I would love to find the right pet for him. ...Is a beagle the right kind of pet for a 6 and 9 year old? ...I know there isn't any guarantee, but just wanted any information you had on a beagle. ...Thank you
...Peggy

Hi Peggy, ...Beagles are irresistable as pups aren't they? And so easy to get attached to. ...To be honest, although beagles are great with active children, they do require some, not much, patience to train and live with. Lovable as Beagles can be, they are not for everyone. ...The # 1 complaint about beagles is the constant barking, loud and often. If there are already beagles in the neighborhood the barking will increase by a factor of ten. One barks the other joins in the third wants to keep up and the first one keeps on barking. Not all your neighbors will find it so ammusing. ...Also, they love to run and hunt and will do anything to escape confines, digging under and squeezing through holes you wouldn't think possible. They tend not to come when called, especially when hot on a trail. So you would have to invest some time and expertise to accomplish this. ...Beags require more than average exersize or they will drive you crazy!, chewing, barking etc. ...On the plus side, they are very gentle and patient with children, ready to play at a moment's notice. It's allmost unheard of for a beagle to bite a child. ...If your family enjoys outdoor activities its even better.

Might I suggest a greyhound. You can adopt one that is two years old. ...They are wonderfull as house pets; do not require a whole lot of exersize, are very quiet and do great in a single pet household. ...Although larger than beags, probably do not weigh as much and would be active enough to match 6 and 9 year olds. ...Also You would be all set with the 10 foot fence you have. ...Or you may stumble across another breed. (Labradors, Retreivers, Brittany Spaniels etc..)

I am glad you are shopping around before choosing the right pet. ...From what I gather, Cocker Spaniels do not have a high owner satisfaction rate, not unlike Rotweilers or Dalmations. ...I just been around Beagles all my life. For me they are Ideal. ...Thanks for your inquiry.

"Back Problems"

3/17/01
How common are back and neck problems in beagles?
...Judy

Fairly common, Judy ...Although Beagles are not prone to back problems as much as the dachshund, They along with Bassets do run a distant "second". Increased weight contributes to the problem. ...One of my beagles was in a minor car accident, deer in road, where he fell forward into the dashboard and strained his neck. A few days later he experienced pain in the neck/upper back area. It lasted a few days and disappeared. The symptoms returned two months later and went away as fast. ...My vet recomends a brand of asprin for human arthritis called "Ascriptin". I give it to my beagles and dachshunds as needed. Contact your vet for right dosage. ...Although a different breed, You might try this link; Dachshund Back Digest

"Ideal Situation"

3/7/01
Cristie, Since you have had beagles all your life I'm asking for advice. I want a beagle based on their size, short hair length, and handsome appearance. Are they easy to housebreak and are they siutable to be around younger kids? I have two daughters and two cats. Would you still recommend a beagle to somebody in my situation?
...Jeff

Hello Jeff, ...You picked the best dog to be around kids. They are the most lovable, patient and easygoing of canines. I never knew one to bite a child. They just love being around young ones. ...Although a true hound, They are compact in size ranging in (ideal) weight from 35 to 50 pounds. However they have an unusual affinity for food and tend to be overweight, like about 45 to 70 pounds easy. There is a "pocket beagle" version, about 25 pounds ideal. My pocket, Susie was a hefty 30 pounder. ...They don't require excessive bathing or grooming. However, I liked to brush my beagles once or twice a week to keep the coats shining and cut down on shedding. I bet your daughters would volunteer for that part. Housebreaking one is a breeze. I'd give it about three or four days and it's a done deal. ...Of course, being scent hounds, they LOVE to hunt and will take off forever and a day, literally for the thrill of the chase. Foxes, coons, squirrels and deer, but especialy rabbits. Lacking "fighter" instincts, they don't normally attack or kill their game so most likely one would get along with your cats. ...I might add, they do bark loud and often, so do not make the best apartment pet or city dwelling companion. Do you have a place in the country? You could take part in the traditional hobby of "beagling". More on those adventures if you are interested. ...Thanks for your inquiry. It really made my day since missing my last beagle, Barney. Let me know how your beagle thing goes if you decide to get one.

"The Right Thing"

3/5/01
I am a 15 year old kid who lets my beagle chase the rabbits that come out all the time, I do this during the fall. Is their any way I can make my beagle better? I live in Delaware if that helps.
...Rachel

Yes Rachel, ...You are doing the right thing, letting your beagle chase rabbits. That is what they were made for! Just make sure your neighbors approve. ...Getting the beagle lots of exersize and practice at tracking will definitley make him a better beagle, keep him occupied and both of you will be happy for it. ...I'm not into hunting but perhaps somebody out there would have more advice? ...I really commend you for bringing out the best in your dog. So many dog owners just chain them up out back, and forget about them. Then wonder whey they bark constantly and chew up everything. ...Happy Beagling to you!

"Hardy Beagles"

What temperatures can beagle dogs stand?
...Chad

3/11/01
Comment
Don't know for sure on the temperature but I feel that any smaller dog, which would include a beagle, should NOT be left outside when it is below 50. I know, I know lots will disagree with me but I believe dogs are pack animals and we are their pack. Would you want to live in the back yard when everyone else gets to be in the house?
...Name withheld

I agree. We are their pack. ...However, Beagles are designed to withstand elements better than most dogs. They have a fluffy undercoat in addition to medium length coarse "overcoat". They love to hunt outside in all but sub-freezing weather. Even then a hot trail will keep em going for hours. Play hard, Rest easy and eat alot is the life of beagles. ...Just make him welcome inside, when he wants. ...The beagle "Nose"

"75 Pounds!"

2/15/01
I know someone who has a 75 pound beagle!I can't seem to get through to him that his dog is way too fat! I love this dear little dog (or indeed BIG dog) but I don't want his owner to love him to death ! How do I get through to the old man that owns him ? He is really set in his ways. He feeds all his animals way too much and says it's because he loves them and doesn't want them to starve. How do I expain? I know he cares about him. I have at least made him cut out the human food treats but he feeds him more food than I do my two large dogs put together! ...Any advice?
..."Doggy"

Wow! ... and I thought my last beagle got bad at 70 pounds! Every beagle I had was overweight at some time or other. There are four "programs" that work.

  1. Chicken and rice diet. This was part of a strict diet we had our very first beagle on. Meant to cure her allergy problems in old age, but she lost weight and kept it off.
  2. Veggie diet. I substituted 1/3 cup green beans for 1/3 of her normal food ration. Kept it up and in a few months she was ideal.
  3. Run, run, run! As for that 70 pounder, once I started turning him loose on the countryside for ten hour runs 3 or 4 times a week, He toned up and slimed down to a svelte 63 pounds.
  4. Diet by association. It also helps if owner is on a lowfat diet himself. Those fattening Treats arent so handy. Try dolling out carrots instead.
...Happy dieting!
