| The Louisville over GA Tech decision was much easier to make than the UNC over Illinois decision. I've lived in Illinois all my life. Most of my family and friends have gone to U of I. I went to high school with Roger Powell (whom my girlfriend claims is my boyfriend). I wanted to believe, I really did. I wanted them to win. But... but I couldn't bet on them. We all had the opportunity to see Illinois play at NU. We all knew they were a great team; it was hard to miss in the papers, on tv, etc. My first reaction was to pick against them just because everyone else was going to pick them, and my second reaction was that this was too good to be true. There had to be some team, outside this Big Ten Bubble, that could at least give them a game. UNC was the first team that could capitalize on Illinois' inside weakness while not getting shot out of the stadium from the perimeter. Illinois wasn't hot, but they weren't cold. They just came up against some tough competition (finally) and choked at the end. I bet on the choke, and it ended up paying off this time. It still hurt though. Illinois has had a long drought of teams winning things. Not since the Bulls dynasty have we had any real success. Jordan was up in a booth watching, knowing exactly what everyone in Orange was longing for. |

| By Matt Cozza Daily 1835 Co-Editor This tournament has been a battle against myself. I had to make some tough decisions. Those decisions kept me on top of the leaderboard for almost the entire tournament, and made me the only non-asian money winner. The battle against myself began with the Georgia Tech/Louisville game and ended in the finals. I first want to thank Louisville for doing so well. It wasn't much of a longshot pick to have them in the Final Four, but it's what kept me at the top towards the end. Louisville ran into Georgia Tech in the Second round, and I was faced with a tough decision: bet against Pitino or bet against my supposed black twin Jarrett Jack. I chose to bet against my twin, because Louisville had an undeniable will to win, and a great sense of urgency (and Ellis Myles!). Once Illinois handled them in the semis, I got a little nervous. Illinois was bringing their A-game against big teams and winning no matter what (Sorry Sam/Arizona). They were hard to pick against and even harder to root against. |
