Preliminary scans in Japanese gaming mag Weekly Famitsu show off Unlimited Saga, the latest chapter in Square's SaGa series and have made their way online. As one of the two titles Square had trademarked earlier last year (along with "Chrono Break," the second sequel to Chrono Trigger), Unlimited Saga has finally reared its head and the results, if nothing else, look stunning.

Unlimited Saga will be released in December of this year in Japan, for the PlayStation 2. An American release is not yet planned. You can visit Unlimited SaGa's official PlayOnline site here.

Square has been forced to temporarily disable item auctions in Final Fantasy XI as part of an initiative to combat cheating. Appartantly, a player(s) somehow managed to illegally collect large amounts of cash through a loophole in the game's auction system. The auctions have now been disabled until such time as Square can release a patch to correct the problem.

For anyone who has FFXI, you may be pleased to find out that on July 2, from approximately 9am to 11am a version upgrade will take place. Afterwards, users will have to download a new patch for the client software on July 9. The new patch includes several new changes to the game such as new interface styles; new items, quests, and synthesis recipes; more of the "emote-command animations"; new spells and job abilities; and treasure probabilities for certain monsters have been adjusted.

If you're anywhere else but in Japan and still want to get your hands on a copy of Final Fantasy XI, you're in luck, as gamers can import Squaresoft's latest venture into it's RPG franchise. Is it worth your money however? Not suprisingly, it is not.

After buying the required items, the modem (or broadband adapter), the hard drive disk, a copy of FFXI of course, and/or the keyboard, it will initially take gamers about 1 to 2 hours to set everything up. I've read reports of people who've had trouble when they get a DNAS verification error. This may be an attempt to block users with modified PS2's but in any case, can be overriden and gamers can safely connect to play FFXI.

Then of course, you have to register PlayOnline's service. According to the staff at IGN, you must use a Japanese address to do so (which makes perfect sense if the game has only been released in Japan). It doesn't matter what you put in afterward, as long as it's from Japan. It would be better if you used the address of someone you knew, but since that probably won't happen to everyone, just be careful that you don't use Microsoft's address or Squaresoft's address (as people who've done so have been quickly banned).

Now, the obvious thing when playing FFXI is that the language of course is in Japanese. There's no getting around that. If you understand the language, then that's all good for you. However, if you don't, there is a server that mostly English speaking importers use. It's called the Ragnarok server. The problem here is that servers are assigned randomly. If you are assigned to a different server and want to be on the Ragnarok server, there is a way to get around this. The first thing would be to get a World Pass, but that's not the cheapest things in the world, so try this next solution. After you creat a character and select your starting nation, you can choose to log in and play. Don't do it. Try going back out to the top page of the game and go into the top option (Select a Character). The second line of your character's information is the server that your are assigned to. If it's not the server you want, then delete the character and try again. It may take awhile, but could be worth it.

If you must have FFXI now, then by all means, go ahead and import it. The language may be an obstacle for most people, but the true emphasis is on gameplay. Still, it would be wise just to wait until FFXI is released over in the states. Unfortunately, that wait has been prolonged to February 2003.
