The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities
On May 3 2008, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities came into being and this was a major advocacy goal for the disability community.
This was the first convention to be adopted by the UN for the Twenty-first Century.
The purpose of the Convention is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.
This year is indeed a momentous occasion for the disability movement, and in particular here in Dominica, considering the numerous challenges we encountered in our formative years.
Our 25th Anniversary should be ordered under the theme:
CELEBRATING OUR UNLIMITED ABILITIES.
Celebration began with an official launching ceremony on May 23.
