Tracker1_0.zip
Supported Operating Systems
Pocket PC:
- JStock Tracker (ver 1.0) uses the Java 1.1 class library. The reason for this is that it was designed to run on the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, running Personal Java (beta ver. 1.1 arm processor). This can be downloaded from the Sun Java Website. JStock Tracker should also run on other Pocket PCs running Personal Java (designed for that device) and I would be interested to hear any feedback on this.
Windows 9x:
- The screen dimensions of the application have been chosen to fit the Pocket PC. The application has, however, been successfully tested to run on the Windows 9x OS.
Installation Instructions
General:
- The extracted Tracker1.zip file should contain install.htm, the Java class files, Tracker1.jar and the Data directory, containing some sample share data (in .csv format). It is important that the Data directory keeps its name and that it is a subdirectory of the folder where the class and jar files are stored (this should happen by default on extracting Tracker1.zip).
Windows 9x:
- Pre-requisite: Java Runtime Environment (downloadable from the Sun Java Website). I have been using version 1.3 and it's usually a safe bet to download the latest release. However, anything from version 1.1 and above should work.
- Execute Tracker1.jar (double-click on the file in Explorer).
Pocket PC:
- Pre-requisite: Personal Java for the Pocket PC (make sure you download the version for the appropriate handheld device). Go to the Sun Java Website for this.
- Copy the extracted files to the handheld device (keeping the same directory structure).
- (For the iPAQ) There are problems in running Tracker1.jar directly. Execute Tracker1.class instead. For devices other than the iPAQ it might be possible to execute Tracker1.jar - any feedback appreciated.
Running Instructions
- The key above the graph can be clicked on to display further information about the stock, including full share name, latest price and date of that price.
Trouble-shooting
Q1: My handheld device doesn't have an Internet connection. How can I obtain share history data?
A1: The best solution is to install JStock Tracker on both the Windows machine and the handheld device and to copy the downloaded data (.csv file) across.
