Gertrude
We are at Elsinore Castle in Denmark. It is a cold winter night. A couple of minutes ago Ophelia had just approached her father, Polonius, and told him about the hysterical and fearful meeting she had just had with Hamlet. Why do you ask about Hamlet's emotions. He had previously found out that his father was found in the garden dead and his mother, Queen Gertrude, had just married his uncle, King Claudius. This analysis is on Queen Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. She has just come from the audience chamber were her and King Claudius have just announced their marriage to each other. She is now in a room with King Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In this act (Act II) I think there is a sense of heat because there is a lot of backstabbing. King Claudius and Queen Gertrude are talking Rosencrantz and Guildenstern into seeing what's up with Hamlet. You can sense feeling of distrust from Queen Gertrude and King Claudius. At this time I think Queen Gertrude is possibly feeling a little stressed and confused-as to what is exactly up. She has just found out about the run in between Hamlet and Ophelia and how angry and mad he was toward her. She, I think, now is feeling pain for Hamlet and in some way is worried about him. |
