RE: Karina Lombard on The L Word
It’s not often I feel compelled to write an official letter, particularly to another country. In this case, however, I feel it is warranted. I am deeply distressed by the news that Karina Lombard has been denied the chance to return to The L Word as Marina due to a contractual disagreement with your network.
Karina Lombard has assured us, her fans (of which there are a great deal!) that she would love to return as Marina and is doing her best to ensure this happens. In this case, I can’t understand wherein the problem lies. In numerous polls regarding the most popular L Word character, Marina has a significant lead over any other character. It would not surprise me if the large majority of these fans were disillusioned – even to the point they would discontinue watching – with both The L Word and Showtime Networks if Karina (as I have read) will not return to The L Word over a mishap in business arrangements. In fact, I very much doubt I will continue watching The L Word once she leaves even though it has quickly grown to be my favourite TV program. However, I do not find the fact surprising given that the main reason I love the show so much is the character of Marina (and the actress Karina Lombard)!
It may be easy to dismiss me personally as a loyal, even obsessive fan, but what can’t be ignored is the sheer number of Marina/Karina fans. In addition, the ones I know seem to be just as outraged and disappointed over the news as me. Just take the time to look at the numerous Save Marina sites, petitions and Marina Karina websites/groups that abound on the internet and you’ll understand what I mean.
As an Australian, I have only just witnessed the end of season one and it is only by chance that I am aware of the fact that Marina is soon to leave The L Word. I am sure that were more Australians aware of her departure, you would be receiving more mail such as this one.
Marina has become somewhat of a cult figure for L Word fans and it is hard for any of us to fathom an L Word without her. I have been a fan (if you can call me that, being an Australian) of the Showtime network ever since its support of both Queer as Folk and The L Word, but since the possibility Marina’s return seems to lie in your hands, I have no choice but to beg you to reconsider. It is for everyone’s benefit that Marina returns.
As ‘Save Marina’ sites seem to have picked up on – for many of us, L is for Lombard and without Lombard there is no L word.
