|I volunteered for Vietnam but was sent to Thailand as an air traffic controller at the Royal Thai Navy base at U-Tapao. My tour was from Feb. 1971 to March of 1973. We were one of the two B-52 bases in SE Asia. I have always felt guilty about serving in the rear area while many of my friends served in Vietnam. What made it worse, was learning that some of them never came home. I hope to God that someday they all come home!

Served with H&S Company, 3/3/3 December 66 thru December 67. Went over on the same ship and if I am not mistaken we pulled liberty together in Naha Okinawa on Chirstmas Dec66. I was in Weapons Section, H&S Company during the time of this action and packed a 3.5 rocket launcher. Things were not easy on anyone and a lot of good men bought the farm in just a few days. "Your brother did his job and we are all better off for his sacriface." God Bless.

I served with E/2/26 and spent many months on Hill 861A, which was the Northern Finger of Hill 861, which Dale and those brave Marines died on. We were also overrun on 05 February 1968, during the Tet Offensive, but managed to drive the enemy off our Hill, the same one Dale and his friends died trying to take.11 Marines died that day and many more were wounded. Maybe it was the legacy of Dale and the other young Marines, which drove us, to beat the large enemy force and keep that little piece of dirt which so many Marines gave their lives to take.

This site is a geat tribute to your brother, and as the Vice President of the khe Sanh Veterans you are welcomed to join our organization, where you may meet many more of the Marines who served with Dale. God Bless you and thank you for helping to keep the memory of Khe Sanh alive, with this site and the story of your brave brothers sacrifice.

Dear Dave,

I was refferred here by a friend from Texas, Jim Wodecki. I am truly sorry for the loss you and your family have suffered. I know only too well what that is. I was in bootcamp when your brother was killed and was fortunate enough to get to the Siege with Bravo 1/26 the following winter. We lost nearly 60 in 11 weeks. It really sucked.

Why did I choose to respond? Because I live in Indiana also, very close to where your family is from. I live in Brown county just east of Stone Head in a little burg called Bellsville. Ain’t nobody here but me and a church but were on the Rand McNally map. I have been to Freetown many times. I used to go thru there all the time on my way to Clearsprings.

You have to be related to the Carmichaels here in Brown County. There is a bunch of them. All good folks. You come from good stock and good country.

It is late better go now. Good on you for keeping yopur brothers memory alive. He would be very proud I know.

I commend you for your web site. I found it by searching northernlight.com for "hill 861 khe sanh". I had the honor of being there for a short while in April or May 1968 - as an Army chopper passenger who was stranded. See my story at http://www.hughcox.com at the main page near the bottom. I request your permission to link my web site to yours under "More about Hill 861".

As I search for the history of the Carmichael family, I don t want to find a memorial name. I saw your brothes name behind his picture on the WALL. I am from Canada, but linked to your site, I have Carmichael roots - I dont know if those of us outside the borders can understand how much you and others have hurt.

It has been a very long time. I did not know dale, but I knew many like him. I do know one of his squad mates, Paul Sluder, hes my brother-in-law. I was a corpsman in Bravo 1/5, know about the Rockpile, Phu bai, Phu
loc, Tet and Que. Those were the two worst years to be there, 67 & 68.

We lost a lot of very real and very brave young men. They fought and died for a cause, for a country, for a dream, but mostly for each other. I was lucky, got dinged but came back all right. I zipped too many bags on too many good young men. It is good to remember your family like this. I
am so very sorry we could not save them all.

Take care.

Greetings to fellow Marines....I live in Cheshire, Ct. and I am a high school English teacher and head football coach. Thirty-two years ago next week (Dec. 12th) my company Kilo 3/26 left Quang Tri and went to Khe Sanh. We were part of the 3 Batallion build-up for what became the siege starting on January 20th. I spent XMAS at the base, but on 27Dec Kilo hiked up and onto 861. (we replaced a company that had been there for months) We ran patrols everyday...night ambushes....LPs, etc. up until 15January. Then the gates and paths through the barbed wire were sealed up, and we began some serious digging in. The shit hit the fan early in the am of 21January and we spent the rest of the siege on 861. About 7April we were heli-lifted to 881s and we took part in the Easter Sunday, World War II, type assault of 881N. I was the FO for KiloI was just an e-3 [LCPL] (the only enlisted FO in the Batallion) and there has not been a waking day since, that at least part of my thoughts

go back to those days and nights in that red-dust, shit hole. My bunker was at the top of the hill (western side) right next to a massive bomb crater from your fights up there eight months earlier. My hat is off to all you Marines and Corpsman who fought in those brutal Hill Fights while I was still back in the States. I still have my FO map of the whole Khe Sanh area and about 80 slides of the KSCB, 861, and the terrain in and around the hill. I made my first trip to DC in 82 and I have vowed to go back to the Wall at least every three years....there are 21 names of friends of mine to visit. I hope all you Kilo people have a great Christmas and a healthy, happy 2000. In my prayers, Ill ask some of my Kilo 3/26 pals to look up some of your guys "out there." Welcome Home and thanks for reading my words.

Dennis

Did Mark Patrick McCarvel serve in Kilo in 1969? I know he was in 3/3 that year and saw action at both Idaho Canyon and Virginia Ridge, among other places. How can I get in touch with him?
