My Cameras
I've updated my camera
collection a little since last summer. Now I've got these - A Holga 120SF,
a Polaroid Colorpack II, a Yashica 635 (TLR), a Canon EOS 5 and a Super 8
Movie Maker (Not a camera but I want to include it in here anyhow). The Canon is absolutely fantastic...it's an amazing machine.
Holga
120SF
The Holga 120SF was my first
love...although being a cheap plastic camera, she's a really beautiful
machine and works real well with black and white film. The best features
of the Holga are the constant light leaks and multiple exposures. Each
Holga is unique and so there really aren't any set rules for using the Holga.
People say that 'With the Holga, you really only want the 6x6
format'...true in a way that the 6x6 format is much sharper and more
artistic looking but the 6x4 format also produces some nice prints (plus,
multiple exposure shots seem to work nicer with the 6x4 format). When you
DO buy a Holga...and finish your first roll, you'll have an urge to throw
away the lens cap - to all Holga owners, the lens cap is probably the
thing that annoys them the most.
The Holga can be used for so many different formats. Use it as is for the
6x4 negatives. Chuck the plastic masking away to use the 6x6 format (don't
forget to tape over the railings)...being a medium format camera...it can
even use 35mm film with a slight modification!!
Advice to anyone who wants to buy a Holga or who already has one - Don't
take the Holga too seriously. It's a fact - the Holga is a "Toy Camera".
Sure, it takes real pro looking photos and LOADS of professional
photographers use it but the Holga is meant to be fun!! Throw away the
rulebook and 'embrace unexpected results'!.
