They had three Sons. All are living members of my Family and have requested, that at present no details are disclosed.
In the Holy Communion book that I have belonging to him it states, Alfred Claude Matthews Saunders, in memory of his confirmation June 23rd 1916. The double surname was explained when I purchased a copy of his Parents Marriage Certificate and discovered that he was born out of wedlock. He never used both Surnames and was always known as SAUNDERS.
My Grandfather worked for most of his life as an Farm labourer. During the war he was a member of the Home Guard and did not go to front lines. He was listed as Reserved Occupation, as with many of the farming community.
It was recorded on his Birth Certificate as living at 30a Cowbridge Road, Cardiff. In the 1891 census this was listed as a Workhouse. It was erected in 1839 and then almost rebuilt in 1880. Towards 1900 many children were accommodated in the Industrial School at Ely. In 1903 the original Industrial Schools were changed to accommodate certain classes of adult inmates, 'Lunatics' and the infirm. The board of guardians were abolished in 1930 and Cardiff City Council resumed responsibility, although there was little change to the actual day to day running of the newly named Poor Law Institution. Records are held at the Glamorgan Records Office. Later this became St David's Hospital, sadly now it is demolished.
