The flower was one of my Mixed Media Paintings I did. The flower was made with a leaf covered in paint. After I covered it in paint I went in a circle with it then it made a flower. I am not very great at art but this was something I could do and it wouldn't look too bad. Nature is very interesting to me and being able to use it to create art was fun.
This is not that good but the water coloring was fun. The watercoloring section of this class was fun and I got to try some things that were new to me. I had not thought about using water colors in a long time but when we got into the section it was fun. water color is not too difficult but can still have good results if you try. Painting this reminded me that even if the work does not look good you can still have fun trying.
This project was one that I thought turned out not too bad but it is kind of hard to see in the picture. The sketch was fun to do and having it turn out decent was cool. I enjoyed making this piece and making i t look almost like broken glass was cool. Learning about how to shade better through making this was important. The things I learned from making this was how to shade better and have more patience when doing art.
This was my sketchbook starter 6 project. I think this one did not turn out too bad except for the sky. Another thing I think I could have done better on was some of the buildings windows do not look to grat. This project was not too hard and I enjoyed doing it. I might try doing this again and taking more time to make it look better.
My Art Experience
For my art experience I went to the local art museum, St. George Art Museum. There were three main exhibits of the museum, the main floor contained a lot of Glen Blakleys work. Most of his work was ceramics and a few paintings. The second section of the museum was Marine Corps Art, the works of art were all paintings. This section had works by many different artists and showed different parts of war from 1975-2018. The final section was by Neil Kesterson, his work included paintings of boats and art made with pieces from Dorie boats. Glen Blakly was very big in the art community of St. George, Utah. As the first director of the St. George Art Museum, the founder of the Art Festival, and a respected professor at Dixie State University.Walking through the museum and looking at all the ceramics and thinking about how much time was spent forming, drying and painting the certain objects helped me appreciate them more. The Art Festival is something I have gone to almost every year and to see the art of the person who created it was very interesting. I did not know that Glen was such a big part of the art community where I live. The art festival is always something I look forward to and like to go see what people have done. The Marine Corps section of the museum was very inspiring to see what the military looks like through the 34 paintings and the two sculptures. There were paintings of many people and of certain military vehicles. This exhibit is actually a traveling exhibit and is just here for a minute so it is cool that I got to see it before it moves to a different location. The paintings are done by Marines and civilians to document the ongoing missions. Neil Kesterson is an outdoors guide for many things like hiking, biking, paddle boarding, and kayaking, on the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and Hoover Dam. He uses parts of Dorie boats to frame his art work and go alongside his paintings in general. Dorie boats were traditional fishing boats. The pieces of boat he uses were from boats that were used on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. One painting that stood out to me was Dories: Holding onto History, itm depicts a wooden boat on the side of a river. The colors of the boat reflect on the water almost like the boat is melting into the water along with all of the colors from the boat. What I see is a night sky in the background with vibrant blues. I can connect to the paintings of boats because my family and I have always gone out during the summer to the nearby lakes and gone boating. While the boat we have is not wooden and controlled by oars, I am still able to enjoy the paintings of boats on the water. These paintings were very bright in color and very vibrant. The art museum is something I drive past almost everyday but never go in. I am glad that this art class has given me the extra push to finally go in and check it out. Art is something all over town like statues, buildings, and many other things, being able to finally go and look around at the museum was a fun experience. While there I got to look at many great pieces and overall I learned about my town's art culture a little bit more. Learning about the artists and seeing their art was something I don't do often and now that I have finally gone and done it I am happy and very glad I went and looked around.Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater
Architecture is probably one of my favorite forms of art. The house in this article is very nice looking and how they used stones stacked on top of one another makes it almost blend in with its environment and to me gives the look like it has been made out of the surrounding stone. It is interesting how Wright’s apprentice Donald said that the stream looks like it flows through the house and not around it, and now that I look at it better it does seem like this. Drawing a design for something that is going to be built normally takes a lot of time and many renditions but how he made the pencil drawing of the design in only two hours and no other preparation was made to do the drawing is very strange. The rock used in the living room next to the window makes a great transition into the woods and the view from the window. How he made the house around the trees and the river is interesting to see because normally a house will sit on the bank or close to the river but it seems like he wanted to just put it right in the middle of the river and design around the landscaping of the house. Using the European Modernistic design and then doing it better is funny to see. He took their ideas then added more and made little changes to suit his own design. It makes it work great in this design. Since the house was made on the water they had to increase the amount of steel reinforcement in the structure but even then it still was not enuff. His use of ferro-concrete was not done before and surprised everyone by his use of it. The house after being built had cracks forming but were always repaired. Even later the 15 foot cantilevers fell about 7 inches. After this they had to use tension cables to correct the problem and also help in the future so the house does not completely collapse. How he made his balcony go six feet farther than the floor below it. The waterfall below is very cool and helps with the end of the house. Frank Lloyed Wright is a great architect and his work is very impressive and has influenced a lot of architecture. In modern day society architecture is very important and can be seen as a big part in our culture. Buildings and landscapes in California are very distinctive to California with palm trees, but if you go to somewhere like Colorado the architecture and the design of the city is very different. Architecture in building is not only what the building looks like but is also part of how the structure can with hold the elements for the safety of the building. The warnings that Edgar Kaufmann talked about were important and he thought that the ground was not going to be enuf support for the house and would cause problems later on, and he was right but at the time they just went ahead with the project and mostly ignored him but did add more steel supports.
Cubism Reflection
Going into this reflection I was not sure what Cubism truly was and after reading the articles I have a better grasp on what it means and how it can be interpreted. While reading and looking at the different pieces of art I started to understand the paintings and the emotions they stood for. Reading about cubism has made me want to go more in depth with similar styles and monochromatic themes. When I first saw the painting Guernica I was unsure of what I was seeing. I could tell there were some animals and people but it was intriguing to see what it really was about. After reading about the painting more I could see what was happening and understood what all the shapes and people meant and showed. When I saw this it was very impactful because it was war shown not just through a picture but through a different form of art I was not used to seeing. What was the process of this artwork? Picasso’s artwork is a painting depicting a disturbing scene with people and animals in pain. It started tith Picasso hearing about a bombing of a town during WW2. The articles were very interesting, learning about the paintings and how Guernica is a depiction of the newspaper he read about the bombing of a town. The articles have been interesting to see how the art style evolved later and through different artists and work of art. What would you like to learn more? Reading about these paintings and works of art from this time have made me want to learn more and see more art form at the same time and see if there are any other painters at this time who showed the war through other perspectives and styles. I would also like to learn more about similar styles and depictions of major world affairs from other artists and see their perspective. Cash Proffitt Reading through the articles has made me want to learn more about how many different styles there are and how you can experiment with new ways to draw or paint. The other cubism pieces are not very similar to the first one. The first painting Guernica was very sad and had a darker tone, while the other pieces are more colorful but keep the same style with different perspectives and a collage of things being displayed. Something I found interesting was how Picasso’s Guitar, Sheet Music and Glass was taken as a response to George Braque’s cubism art piece. It seemed to me that Picasso was just doing his take on how you can use the cubism art style as a way to communicate in college of different subjects to make a point. Learning about a new style is interesting because I had not really seen cubism very much and did not know a lot about it but while reading and looking at more cubism art I was very interested in how the perspective changes from characters or point of interests. The college way of cubism is interesting to look at because the closer you look things become more clear, but if you try to find something too far in it could be confusing. When I first looked at Guernica I was not sure what it was depicting but when I learned more about iit and knew what I was looking for it made sense. When I looked closer at the person coming in on the top left, I could tell there was a candle in their hand.
Pottery is interesting to me because it takes so much time and lots of concentration. You could be working on a project for an hour then you make the wrong move and all that work is gone. This can be said for almost every form of art and is why I can respect artists for being so patient and precise. There are many ways you can make ceramics and all of them are very tedious but i think they all look cool. I have a lot of respect for artists and their patients and concentration capabilities.
